9 Facts About Lusail Stadium

The Lusail Stadium is the new stadium in Doha, Qatar set to host a multitude of 2022 World Cup matches. So here are 9 facts on the stadium:

1. Opened

The Lusail Stadium was opened on 22 November 2021. Construction began in 2017 and plans were first drafted up in 2014 when Qatar first secured the bid of the 2022 World Cup.

2. Cost

The cost of the construction of the stadium is roughly 767 million dollars. This is also the rough cost of how much Wembley Stadium was when it was built in 2007.

3. Design

The Lusail Stadium is a state-of-the-art metropolis with its innovative design. This area of the city will later be the ground for 200,000 people, residing in harmony with nature.

4. Construction

The stadium was designed by two famous architectural firms; Foster + Partners, and Populous. The stadium was built by the construction firms HBK Contracting and China Railway Construction Corporation.

5. Capacity

With a capacity of 80,000, Lusail Stadium will be the biggest tournament venue for the 2022 World Cup.

6. Green Motive

A great effort has been put by the management to conserve the resources during and after the construction. From recycling waste, water, and other natural resources to jotting the long-term use of every material. Steps have been taken to ensure the use of public transportation, reducing carbon emissions.

7. Reconfiguration

After the 2022 World Cup, Lusail Stadium will be transformed into a community space including schools, shops, cafés, sports facilities, and health clinics. The capacity will also be reduced from the main 80,000 to around 20,000.

8. Hosting

The stadium – one of eight venues for the tournament – will host a total of 10 matches, including the final and matches during every stage of the event.

9. Roof Design

The roof of Lusail Stadium Qatar holds another significance when we talk about the construction techniques. A state-of-the-art material has been used for the construction of the roof to allow the optimum amount of light to enter the Stadium. The roof will allow light for the perfect growth of pitch grass and maintain the right temperature without burdening the air-conditioning facility of the Stadium.
