When Allegiant Stadium opened in 2020, it marked a new era for both Las Vegas and the NFL. The venue, located just off the Strip, became the new home of the Raiders after their relocation from Oakland. The first game held inside the 65,000-seat arena was more than a sporting event. It symbolised the city’s growing reputation as a major sports hub.

The Inaugural Match

The first official game at Allegiant Stadium took place on 21 September 2020, when the Las Vegas Raiders hosted the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football. The contest carried extra weight as it was not only the team’s home debut in Las Vegas but also a nationally televised showcase for the new venue.

Despite the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which meant no fans could attend in person, the game drew widespread attention. The Raiders triumphed 34–24, giving the franchise a statement victory against one of the NFC’s strongest sides at the time.

Key Performances

  • Derek Carr led the Raiders with three touchdown passes, showing command and composure under pressure.
  • Darren Waller became the focal point of the offence, hauling in 12 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.
  • The Raiders defence forced timely stops in the second half, sealing a memorable first win in their new home.

For the Saints, Drew Brees threw for 312 yards but was limited by second-half adjustments. Running back Alvin Kamara stood out with 174 total yards and two touchdowns.

Stadium Significance

Allegiant Stadium’s debut highlighted its role as one of the most modern venues in American sports. With a translucent roof, a striking black exterior, and a retractable field system, it quickly became known as the “Death Star.” Even without a crowd, the broadcast images showcased its architecture and the ambition behind its construction.

The game reinforced Las Vegas as a major sports destination, adding to the city’s identity alongside the Golden Knights in the NHL and a rising reputation for hosting marquee events.

Legacy of the First Game

The victory over New Orleans set the tone for the Raiders’ Las Vegas era. Although the season itself was mixed, the first game remains a milestone. It represented resilience during a disrupted year and provided fans with the promise of what Allegiant Stadium could become once it welcomed full crowds.
