The Eredivisie is the highest level of professional football in the Netherlands. The league was founded in 1956, two years after the start of professional football in the Netherlands. It is contested by 18 clubs. At the end of each season, the two clubs at the bottom are automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie. The club finishing third from the bottom of the bottom of the Eredivisie goes to separate promotion/relegation play-offs with eight high-placed clubs from the Eerste Divisie. The top 2 teams qualify for the Champions League. Ajax are the most successfull club with 34 titles. There were no changes in the league’s makeup for 2020-21 season due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic as the previous season was voided.
