The Eredivisie is the top football division in the Netherlands. The league was founded in 1956, two years after the start of professional football in the Netherlands. It is contested by 18 clubs. At the end of each season, the two clubs at the bottom are automatically relegated to the Eerste Divisie. The club finishing third from the bottom of the bottom of the Eredivisie goes to separate promotion/relegation play-offs with eight high-placed clubs from the Eerste Divisie. The top 2 teams qualify for the Champions League. Third placed team qualify for the Conference League and teams from 4th to 7th place qualify for European competition play-offs. Ajax are the most successfull club with 36 titles and are also the defending champions.
