Future Olympic Stadiums

Today we’re taking a look at the future Olympic stadiums, that will host the upcoming Olympic Games. We’re looking at the main stadium for upcoming summer and winter games, starting with the 2022 games in Beijing and finishing with the 2032 games in Brisbane.

What is an Olympic stadium?

An Olympic stadium is the site of the opening and closing ceremonies. Many, though not all, of these venues, actually contain the words Olympic Stadium as part of their names. Olympic Stadium may also be named a multi-purpose stadium that hosts Olympic sports.

Beijing National Stadium – Beijing 2022

The host of the next games, the 24th Olympic Winter Games will be Beijing, and its National Stadium also known as the Bird’s Nest. The 2022 Winter Olympic games are scheduled to take place from 4 to 20 February 2022. The Beijing National Stadium was already the host of the 2008 Summer Games, for which it was built and has a capacity of 80,000. Beijing 2022 will be the first Winter Olympics to be held in China.

Stade de France – Paris 2024

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, and Stade de France will be the main stadium. Stade de France opened on 28 January 1998 and was the main venue for the 1998 FIFA World Cup and has a capacity of 80,698. This will be the 33rd Summer Olympic Games and Paris will become the second city to host the Olympics three times, having previously hosted the games in 1900 and 1924. The games will take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024.

San Siro – 2026 Milano-Cortina

Officially known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the San Siro will host the opening ceremony of the 25th Olympic Winter Games, which will be hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. San Siro is a football stadium and was built in 1926 and it has a maximum capacity of 80,000. This will be the fourth Olympic Games hosted in Italy and it will be the first Olympic Games featuring two host cities in an official form. The games will take place from 6 to 22 February 2026.

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – Los Angeles 2028

The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles and the main venue will be the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which opened on 1 May 1923 and has a capacity of 70,516. This will be the third Summer Olympics hosted by Los Angeles and also the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. These will be the fifth Summer Olympic Games and the ninth overall Olympics to be held in the United States. The 2028 games are scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 6, 2028.

Brisbane Cricket Ground – Brisbane 2032

The host of the 35th Summer Olympics will be Brisbane, and the main venue Brisbane Cricket Ground also commonly known as the Gabba. The current capacity of the stadium which opened in 1895 will be upgraded from 42,000 to 50,000. The 2023 games will be the third Summer Games to be held in Australia and will take place from 23 July to 8 August 2032.
