The stadium is owned by the Qatar Football Association and will be the largest stadium in the use for the World Cup with a capacity of 80,000 which also makes it the largest stadium in Qatar. The stadium was designed by British firm Foster + Partners, and Populous, with the construction starting in 2017. It opened 4 years later on 22 November 2021.

The stadium’s design is inspired by the ‘fanar’ lantern’s interplay of light and shadow. Lusail’s shape and facade echo the intricate decorative motifs on bowls and other vessels characteristic of the golden age of art and craftsmanship in the Arab and Islamic world. Like the other stadiums at the World Cup, the Lusail Stadium will be cooled using solar power and have a zero carbon footprint.

The stadium will host ten matches during the World Cup, including the final on 18 December.

Following the World Cup, it is expected to be reconfigured into a 40,000-seat stadium. Excess seating will be removed, and other parts of the building repurposed as a community space with shops, cafés, athletic and education facilities, and a health clinic.
