Inside the Halo: The 360-Degree Video Board That Redefined Stadium Screens

A Modern Marvel in Stadium Design

When Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017, it was already clear that Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank wanted something more than another NFL arena. The centrepiece of that ambition sits high above the field, circling the roof like a digital crown. The Halo Video Board is the world’s first and only 360-degree, continuous LED scoreboard, and it remains one of the most audacious pieces of sports architecture ever built.

Design and Specifications

The Halo stretches an astonishing 1,075 feet in circumference and 58 feet high, wrapping around the stadium’s retractable roof opening. It boasts 63,000 square feet of display area, with an LED resolution of 5,120 by 1,080 pixels. The sheer scale allows fans seated anywhere in the 71,000-capacity stadium to view replays, stats, and highlights with clarity and precision.

The board was developed by Daktronics, a company known for pushing the boundaries of sports display technology. The system uses millions of LEDs to create vibrant, high-contrast visuals that remain sharp even under Atlanta’s bright sunlight when the roof panels are open.

Engineering Feat

Creating a ring-shaped display was no easy task. Engineers had to design custom curved panels that could flex to form the continuous circle. The Halo had to be suspended from the retractable roof structure, which itself opens in eight triangular petals. Every element, from the cabling to the power distribution, had to account for movement, weight distribution, and heat management.

The result is a seamless integration between architecture and technology. It is both a visual centrepiece and a functional element, providing the stadium’s fans with live video, dynamic graphics, player stats, and even fan prompts during crucial moments.

Immersive Fan Experience

When the Falcons take the field or Atlanta United score a goal, the Halo Video Board transforms the stadium atmosphere. Its massive circumference ensures that every seat, from the lower bowl to the upper corners, shares the same focal point. Unlike traditional end-zone screens, the Halo surrounds the audience, creating a sense of total immersion.

It can display multiple video feeds simultaneously, split into sections for replays, stats, or fan reactions. During major events such as the Super Bowl LIII and College Football Playoff National Championship, the Halo has been used for elaborate pre-game shows, light displays, and live concert visuals.

Symbol of Atlanta Innovation

The Halo Video Board is more than an entertainment screen. It has become an architectural symbol of Atlanta’s modern identity. Its futuristic ring mirrors the city’s reputation for innovation and creativity, while also reinforcing Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s place among the world’s most technologically advanced arenas.

From a design perspective, it embodies the philosophy that stadiums should be experiences rather than mere venues. The Halo does not just show the game, it defines how the game feels inside the building.

Legacy and Influence

Since its debut, the Halo Video Board has inspired stadium projects around the world. Other arenas have adopted circular or wraparound video concepts, but none have replicated its full 360-degree design. For fans and architects alike, it has set a new standard in immersive stadium technology.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s Halo is as much a part of the game as the players on the field. It commands attention, shapes emotion, and frames every moment of triumph or heartbreak in vivid colour and light.
