At the Etihad Stadium, though, the fixture has developed a recognisable personality.

City usually have the ball. Forest usually have less of it than they would ideally like. The question is whether City turn that control into the sort of comfortable afternoon everyone expects, or whether Forest can make the match awkward enough for doubt to creep into the stadium.

For several seasons, the answer was emphatically City.

Then came March 2026.

Forest twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at the Etihad, despite City having 70 per cent possession. It was a useful reminder that football stubbornly refuses to behave like a spreadsheet.

Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest at the Etihad: Recent Results

Since Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022, their league visits to the Etihad have produced a pretty clear progression.

Across those four matches, City scored 13 goals and Forest scored two.

The interesting bit is where those two Forest goals appear. Both came in the most recent meeting.

That feels significant. Forest went from being comprehensively beaten, to contained, to beaten again, and finally to taking something home with them.

The 6-0 in 2022: Haaland Introduces Himself

Forest’s first Premier League trip to the Etihad after promotion was brutal.

City won 6-0 on 31 August 2022, with Erling Haaland scoring a first-half hat-trick. João Cancelo added the fourth before Julián Álvarez scored twice.

Haaland’s treble was his second successive Premier League hat-trick and took him to nine goals after only five appearances.

Watching City around this period could feel slightly unfair. You spent years hearing that Premier League football was supposed to require adjustment, patience and perhaps a cold Tuesday somewhere unpleasant.

Haaland apparently missed that meeting.

Forest were simply overwhelmed. City could move them around through possession, attack the spaces created by that movement and then send the ball towards a striker who seemed designed specifically to punish defenders who were already exhausted.

The scoreline remains the biggest of Forest’s recent Etihad visits.

The 2-0 in 2023 Was Stranger Than It Looks

A 2-0 Manchester City home win sounds almost aggressively ordinary.

The actual game was not.

Phil Foden put City ahead after seven minutes, finishing a remarkable 46-pass move. Haaland doubled the advantage seven minutes later.

At that point, Forest looked in serious trouble.

Then Rodri was sent off immediately after half-time.

Forest pushed harder, but the champions showed they could defend territory and manage a match rather than simply suffocate it through possession.

Kevin De Bruyne Takes Over in 2024

The December 2024 meeting came under very different circumstances.

City were in trouble.

They had gone seven matches without a victory in all competitions and had lost four consecutive Premier League games. Suddenly, the Etihad was hosting something rather unfamiliar: a Manchester City side badly needing reassurance.

Forest did not provide any.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring before Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0. Jérémy Doku completed a 3-0 victory in the second half. De Bruyne finished with a goal and an assist on his return to the starting XI.

For me, this is the most important Etihad meeting between the clubs before the 2026 draw.

The 6-0 demonstrated City’s ceiling. The 3-0 showed their capacity to rediscover themselves when confidence had disappeared.

De Bruyne was central to it.

There was a familiar authority to his performance. Forest were facing a City team carrying genuine pressure, yet once De Bruyne started finding spaces between the lines, the match began looking suspiciously like the old City again.

The 2-2 Draw in 2026 Changed the Pattern

On 4 March 2026, Forest finally broke through.

Antoine Semenyo gave City the lead after 31 minutes before Morgan Gibbs-White equalised shortly after half-time.

Why Forest Can Be Awkward for City

The basic tactical problem for Forest at the Etihad is obvious.

Trying to out-pass Manchester City is generally not Plan A unless you have an unusually adventurous relationship with danger.

The more realistic route is to concede possession selectively, remain compact and attack the space City leave when committing players forward.

That requires enormous concentration.

City are happy to circulate possession until a defender moves a few yards too far. Once that happens, the attack can accelerate rapidly through combinations around the penalty area.

Forest therefore need discipline more than aggression.

There is little value charging after City’s centre-backs if the press is not coordinated. One player jumps, City play around him, and suddenly somebody like Foden is receiving between the lines with defenders retreating towards their own goal.

That is generally where the afternoon starts becoming expensive.

The Haaland Problem

Forest’s defensive planning at the Etihad inevitably has to account for Erling Haaland.

His 2022 hat-trick demonstrated the problem perfectly.

Defend deep and Haaland occupies the centre-backs inside the penalty area.

Push higher and there is space behind.

Commit extra defenders to him and City gain room elsewhere.

Leave him isolated against one centre-back and good luck with that.

The most effective approach is usually preventative. Stop the service rather than expecting defenders to repeatedly beat Haaland once the ball reaches dangerous areas.

That means closing crossing angles, protecting central passing lanes and making City’s creators receive the ball in less threatening positions.

Easy to type. Considerably harder when the ball has already been passed 30 times and your midfield has been dragged from one side of the pitch to the other.

Forest’s Counter-Attacking Threat

The 2026 draw demonstrated why Forest cannot simply be treated as passive visitors.

Morgan Gibbs-White has been particularly important because he gives Forest a player capable of carrying possession through transitions rather than immediately surrendering it.

That matters enormously at the Etihad.

Winning the ball is only half the job. Teams then need enough composure to escape City’s counter-press.

A clearance buys five seconds.

A progressive pass can create an attack.

Forest’s best moments tend to come when they bypass City’s first wave of pressure and can attack defenders who are moving backwards. It turns City’s territorial dominance into temporary vulnerability.

Those opportunities are rare, but Forest no longer need many of them.

Their efficiency in the 2026 meeting proved the point.

How the Fixture Has Evolved

There is a neat progression in the four recent Etihad meetings.

The first was destruction.

The second required City to manage adversity.

The third became a confidence-restoring victory during a difficult spell.

The fourth ended with Forest taking a point.

That makes the fixture more interesting than the raw historical imbalance suggests.

City remain the side expected to dictate possession and territory at home. Forest’s challenge has gradually shifted from basic survival towards finding ways to exploit the moments when City’s control becomes vulnerable.

The 6-0 feels a long way from the 2-2.

That is progress you can actually see.

Etihad Stadium Factor

Playing City at the Etihad has traditionally required patience bordering on sainthood.

The pitch can feel enormous when the home side begin switching play. Forest’s midfielders are forced to cover large distances while City’s attackers repeatedly rotate positions.

There is also a psychological element.

Opponents can survive 20 minutes, defend well and feel reasonably comfortable, then concede after one lapse. Suddenly the entire plan changes.

It captured Guardiola’s football at its most controlled.

Forest’s Best Etihad Performance

The 2-2 draw in March 2026 comfortably takes this one.

Not because Forest dominated. They didn’t.

They had only 30 per cent possession and were heavily outpassed.

What they did have was resilience and efficiency.

Forest absorbed pressure, survived long periods without the ball and twice responded to falling behind.

For an away side at the Etihad, that is often what success looks like.

You rarely get to control the entire match.

You need to control the moments that matter.

Which, frankly, is about as Raiders as architecture gets.

Opened in 2020 as the new home of the Las Vegas Raiders, the stadium was designed by MANICA Architecture with HNTB serving as architect of record. The finished building covers roughly 1.8 million square feet, seats around 65,000 spectators and cost approximately $1.9 billion to construct.

Yet the numbers only explain the scale. They do not explain why Allegiant Stadium looks the way it does.

The design grew from several overlapping ideas: the visual identity of the Raiders, futuristic automotive styling, Las Vegas entertainment architecture, the Nevada climate and a desire to create something that could immediately become recognisable on television.

There is also the small matter of the Death Star.

That nickname was not an architectural accident.

The Raiders Came Before Las Vegas

The most important design influence was always the Raiders themselves.

Silver and black is one of the strongest visual identities in American professional sport. Moving the franchise to Nevada created a problem architects could easily have got wrong. The Raiders needed a modern Las Vegas stadium without looking as though somebody had put slot machines in the Oakland Coliseum.

Instead, the design went in the opposite direction.

The exterior is dominated by dark glass, black structural surfaces and silver elements. There is relatively little visual clutter. From a distance, the stadium appears almost monolithic.

That restraint matters.

Las Vegas is filled with buildings screaming for attention. Allegiant Stadium gets attention by looking strangely calm among them.

Architect David Manica had already worked with Raiders owner Mark Davis on plans connected with an earlier proposed move to Southern California. When the Las Vegas project developed, elements of that work were retained and refined for the new location. The Raiders themselves describe the eventual design as enhancing characteristics from the earlier project while creating a building that complemented the Las Vegas Strip.

So Allegiant Stadium was not conceived entirely from scratch after the Raiders arrived in Nevada. There was already a design language developing around what a purpose-built Raiders stadium should look like.

A Futuristic Luxury Car Was a Major Inspiration

One of the more interesting documented influences is automotive design.

Mortenson describes the stadium as being visually inspired by the gradual curves of a futuristic luxury vehicle.

Once you know that, it becomes difficult not to see it.

Look at Allegiant Stadium from the side rather than directly from the front. The building has the long horizontal profile of a concept car. The black glazing resembles tinted automotive glass, while silver structural elements act almost like trim.

There are few unnecessary projections interrupting the silhouette.

It is closer to automotive industrial design than traditional stadium architecture.

That also makes considerable sense for the Raiders. Their visual culture has always contained motorcycles, leather, chrome, customised cars and a certain slightly threatening road-warrior quality.

If the Dallas Cowboys built an enormous monument to Texas spectacle at AT&T Stadium, the Raiders effectively built the NFL equivalent of a black concept car.

Naturally, they parked it in Vegas.

Why Allegiant Stadium Looks Like the Death Star

The Death Star comparison appeared almost immediately.

There is no need to pretend otherwise. The building is enormous, black, futuristic and slightly sinister. Put it against the Nevada desert and the comparison more or less writes itself.

Raiders owner Mark Davis enthusiastically adopted the nickname.

When the team first practised inside the stadium in August 2020, Davis welcomed them to the “Death Star” and added that it was where opponents’ dreams would come to die.

That tells us something important about the success of the architecture.

The nickname fits the franchise.

Raiders branding has traditionally leaned into intimidation. The pirate shield, black uniforms, silver helmets and reputation of the old Oakland teams all contributed to an identity built around being outsiders.

A shiny white stadium would have felt peculiar.

Allegiant looks imposing without relying upon decorative gimmicks. Its sheer dark mass does most of the work.

And yes, it looks especially good at night.

Las Vegas Influenced the Stadium Without Taking It Over

Designing anything substantial in Las Vegas presents an interesting architectural problem.

How much Vegas do you put into it?

Too little and the building could be anywhere. Too much and you risk constructing a football-themed casino.

Allegiant Stadium takes a fairly disciplined approach.

Its connection with Las Vegas is expressed primarily through orientation, views, entertainment spaces and atmosphere rather than obvious decorative references.

The stadium stands just west of Interstate 15, close enough to the Strip for the skyline to become part of the experience.

Large operable walls at the north end can open towards views of Las Vegas.

That was a smart piece of design.

Instead of attempting to compete architecturally with the Strip, Allegiant uses the Strip itself as scenery.

The city becomes part of the stadium.

The Lanai Doors Create the Las Vegas Connection

Among Allegiant Stadium’s most distinctive architectural elements are the huge operable openings at its northern end.

Opening this part of the building visually connects the enclosed stadium with Las Vegas beyond.

It helps solve one of the fundamental problems of domed stadium design.

Enclosed NFL venues can become inward-looking boxes. Climate control improves comfort, but you sometimes lose any sense of where the stadium actually is.

Allegiant attempts to provide both.

Fans get an air-conditioned environment suitable for southern Nevada while retaining a visual relationship with the city.

It is particularly effective because Las Vegas has a skyline worth framing.

Nobody is spending two billion dollars designing giant windows towards an industrial estate.

The Roof Was Inspired by Climate as Much as Appearance

The roof provides one of the best examples of architecture responding to Las Vegas rather than simply decorating it.

Allegiant Stadium uses an approximately seven-acre ETFE roof supported by a cable-net system involving 100 stainless-steel cables.

ETFE has become increasingly common in modern stadium architecture because it is lightweight and capable of admitting natural light.

But Las Vegas creates an obvious complication.

Sunlight is not exactly difficult to find.

Early thinking included more transparent roof panels, similar in concept to those used at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. According to Mortenson, Mark Davis attended Super Bowl LII there and felt the sunny environment was too bright. Nevada’s desert climate also created energy and cooling issues.

The solution was silver fritting within the ETFE material, which reflects heat and reduces the amount of direct light entering the building. Mortenson says the frit patterns can provide opacity of up to 95 per cent.

It is a nice example of engineering changing the aesthetic.

The roof still feels light and modern, but Allegiant does not become a 65,000-seat greenhouse.

As somebody raised in Los Angeles, I appreciate architecture that eventually remembers the sun exists.

Why Allegiant Stadium Has a Fixed Roof

The absence of a conventional retractable roof is significant.

During the 1990s and 2000s, retractable roofs became one of those features every ambitious American stadium seemed expected to have. Houston got one. Dallas got one. Indianapolis got one.

Then owners began looking at how often some of these things were actually opened.

Retractable roofs are heavy, expensive and mechanically complicated. Mortenson has noted the broader movement towards fixed translucent roofing as stadium designers looked for ways of producing an indoor-outdoor feeling without installing enormous moving roof structures.

In Las Vegas, climate control was always going to dominate the conversation.

A fixed translucent roof therefore made sense financially and operationally while still allowing daylight into the stadium.

It is less theatrical than watching a roof slide open.

It is also considerably harder to break.

The Retractable Grass Field Flips the Traditional Idea

If the roof does not move, the football field does.

This is one of Allegiant Stadium’s cleverest engineering decisions.

The Raiders play on natural grass. Rather than attempting to maintain that grass permanently beneath the roof, the entire playing surface sits on a huge movable tray.

The field weighs close to 20 million pounds and travels on 540 electrically powered wheels. When required, it can be moved outside the stadium where the grass receives natural sunlight and irrigation.

Inside, an artificial surface can be used for UNLV football and other events.

There is a certain beautiful absurdity to moving an entire football field outdoors because the roof refuses to move.

But technically it makes sense.

It also reflects one of the larger ideas behind Allegiant Stadium: separate systems according to their function rather than forcing one enormous mechanism to solve everything.

The Al Davis Memorial Torch Gives the Building a Heart

For all the glass, cables, engineering and luxury spaces, Allegiant Stadium needed something emotionally connected to Raiders history.

That role belongs largely to the Al Davis Memorial Torch.

The torch honours the longtime Raiders owner whose influence shaped almost every aspect of the franchise’s identity.

That matters because Allegiant could otherwise have felt like a complete break with Oakland.

Modern NFL stadiums can sometimes resemble extremely expensive international airports. They are technologically impressive, commercially efficient and strangely detached from the teams playing inside them.

The Raiders avoided some of that by incorporating their history directly into the building.

The torch gives supporters a symbolic focal point and connects the Las Vegas era with everything that came before it.

Without elements like this, Allegiant might simply have been an impressive building.

With them, it becomes recognisably a Raiders building.

Las Vegas Entertainment Culture Shaped the Interior

The influence of Las Vegas becomes more obvious once you move inside.

Allegiant Stadium was designed as a multipurpose entertainment venue rather than simply somewhere to stage eight or nine NFL regular-season games each year.

Premium hospitality occupies a significant role.

Perhaps the most Vegas example is Wynn Field Club, an approximately 11,000-square-foot nightlife venue located at field level in the north end zone. It incorporates DJ booths, bottle service, extensive screens and a 45,000-watt sound system.

At most stadiums, having a nightclub practically touching the end zone would seem ridiculous.

In Las Vegas, you wonder why nobody installed two.

The design acknowledges that the stadium competes within one of the world’s largest entertainment markets.

Fans arriving in Las Vegas already have hundreds of places demanding their money and attention. Allegiant therefore has to function as part sporting arena, part hospitality venue and part major-event destination.

Technology Became Part of the Architecture

Another major influence was the changing expectation of what an NFL stadium should provide.

Allegiant was built during an era when stadiums were becoming enormous digital platforms.

Mortenson reports more than 66,000 square feet of LED displays, three 4K HDR-capable video boards and extensive wireless infrastructure. Earlier construction information detailed more than 1,700 Wi-Fi access points and hundreds of miles of connectivity infrastructure.

Those systems influence architecture because modern stadium design has to accommodate far more than seats and concourses.

Power, data, screens, broadcast infrastructure, mobile ticketing and wireless coverage have become fundamental building services.

The modern stadium is essentially a giant computer with hot dogs.

Allegiant Stadium by the Numbers

How Allegiant Fits Into Modern NFL Stadium Design

Allegiant Stadium belongs to the generation that followed AT&T Stadium and preceded the next wave of increasingly specialised American sports venues.

AT&T Stadium demonstrated the commercial potential of turning an NFL ground into a destination in its own right.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium pushed expressive roof architecture.

U.S. Bank Stadium demonstrated how extensive translucent roofing could transform an enclosed stadium.

SoFi Stadium went considerably further, essentially blurring the boundaries between stadium, entertainment complex and urban development.

Allegiant sits somewhere between these philosophies.

It is less architecturally complicated than SoFi and considerably more restrained externally than Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Its strongest visual idea is remarkably simple.

Make it black.

Make it sleek.

Make it unmistakably Raiders.

Then point part of it towards Las Vegas.

That simplicity has aged rather well.

Design Versus Practicality

The clever thing about Allegiant Stadium is that several features which look dramatic are actually responses to practical problems.

This is where I think Allegiant succeeds.

There are flashier stadiums.

There are probably more beautiful ones.

But relatively few modern NFL buildings connect team identity, location and engineering this cleanly.

Is Allegiant Stadium Good Architecture?

I think so, although it depends what you want a stadium to be.

If you prefer traditional football grounds where the architecture grew organically over decades, Allegiant can feel almost unnervingly polished.

There are no mismatched stands or odd corners created by 70 years of redevelopment. Nothing looks accidental.

This is corporate-era stadium architecture from the ground up.

Yet the Raiders were unusually well suited to that approach.

Their visual identity was already minimalist before minimalism became fashionable. Silver, black, steel, leather and menace have been doing the heavy lifting since long before somebody in Silicon Valley discovered monochrome branding.

Allegiant translates that identity into architecture surprisingly well.

It also understands Las Vegas.

Rather than covering the building with neon and pretending to be another casino, the stadium largely lets the city provide the spectacle around it.

That restraint may ultimately be the smartest design decision of all.

Takeaway

Allegiant Stadium could only really belong to the Raiders.

Its black shell, silver detailing, enormous translucent roof and futuristic curves translate the franchise’s visual identity into something approaching monumental architecture.

Automotive design influenced its silhouette. Raiders history influenced its colours and symbolism. Las Vegas shaped its entertainment spaces and relationship with the skyline. Nevada’s climate dictated major engineering decisions involving the roof and playing surface.

The result is one of the most immediately recognisable stadiums in the NFL.

And then there is the Death Star nickname.

Architects can spend years developing design concepts, visual narratives and carefully worded descriptions of their work.

Sometimes the public looks at the finished building and says, “That’s a Death Star.”

In this case, I suspect everybody involved was perfectly happy with that.

Barcelona usually arrive with more international stars, greater financial resources and, in many eras, a side expected to challenge for every major trophy available. Athletic approach the same fixture with a very different model, built around Basque identity, Lezama and a relationship between club and city that is difficult to replicate.

Then the whistle goes and those differences can become strangely irrelevant.

Barcelona have certainly enjoyed successful visits to Bilbao, but San Mamés has also produced some of their most uncomfortable nights in Spanish football. Athletic have beaten great Barcelona teams here, knocked them out of the Copa del Rey and, on one remarkable evening, put four goals past them.

For me, that unpredictability is precisely why this fixture works. Barcelona may arrive as favourites. San Mamés rarely behaves as though it has read the odds.

Athletic Club vs Barcelona at San Mamés

The rivalry has roots stretching back to the earliest years of national Spanish competition. Athletic’s own historical figures recorded 109 official meetings with Barcelona at San Mamés by February 2020, with Athletic leading the historical home series at that point with 52 victories, 24 draws and 33 Barcelona wins.

That record matters.

There are very few major Spanish grounds where Barcelona have historically encountered that sort of resistance.

The present San Mamés opened in 2013 next to the site of the original stadium, but the character of the fixture survived the move. Athletic have subsequently beaten Barcelona there in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

Selected modern classics

There is a fairly obvious pattern here. Cup football and San Mamés are a dangerous combination for Barcelona.

Athletic refused to be intimidated and eventually broke through when Iker Muniain scored in the 70th minute. Barcelona had gone through their opening 14 league matches without defeat. Athletic became the first side to beat them.

There was symbolism to it.

Moving stadiums can sterilise a football club if everything becomes too comfortable. New seats, corporate lounges and better toilets are welcome, naturally, but supporters generally prefer their stadiums to retain at least a little menace.

Beating Barcelona in the opening months suggested the new San Mamés might inherit some of the old one’s personality.

Athletic 4-0 Barcelona, 2015: The Aduriz Masterclass

If one match has to represent Barcelona’s modern relationship with San Mamés, I would choose this one.

Barcelona were reigning European champions. Luis Enrique’s side had Messi, Suárez, Iniesta, Busquets and a squad packed with players accustomed to treating major finals as part of the annual diary.

Athletic beat them 4-0.

And it could hardly have started more dramatically.

Marc-André ter Stegen headed the ball clear outside his penalty area, only for Mikel San José to send it straight back over him from close to halfway.

Then came Aduriz.

The Athletic striker scored three times in 15 second-half minutes, turning an impressive performance into one of the club’s great modern nights. Athletic’s official match record confirms the goals came in the 53rd, 62nd and 68th minutes.

Why Barcelona struggled

Athletic made the game physically and tactically unpleasant.

They pressed aggressively, competed for second balls and prevented Barcelona from settling into the slow circulation from which they usually established control. Once the second goal arrived, the match became increasingly chaotic.

Barcelona were still technically superior.

Athletic simply made technical superiority increasingly difficult to express.

The 4-0 victory gave them a huge advantage before the return leg, where a 1-1 draw completed a 5-1 aggregate triumph and delivered Athletic’s first major trophy since 1984.

For a generation of Athletic supporters, Aduriz’s hat-trick is inseparable from San Mamés itself.

Athletic 2-1 Barcelona, 2017: Three Minutes of Mayhem

Athletic did not need long to wreck Barcelona’s evening.

Barcelona suddenly found themselves 2-0 down in a stadium that was thoroughly enjoying the situation.

Lionel Messi pulled one back after the interval and Barcelona eventually overturned the tie with a 3-1 victory at Camp Nou.

That prevents this match ranking alongside Athletic’s great cup eliminations, but as a standalone San Mamés performance it deserves inclusion.

The first half demonstrated a recurring Athletic strategy against Barcelona: disrupt the build-up, attack quickly and use the crowd to increase the psychological pressure.

Barcelona escaped the tie.

They certainly did not enjoy Bilbao.

Athletic 1-0 Barcelona, 2019: Aduriz Defies Time

There are good goals, great goals and goals that appear to have been written by someone with an unhealthy enthusiasm for melodrama.

Aritz Aduriz against Barcelona belongs firmly in the third category.

The striker was 38 and had announced that the 2019/20 campaign would be his final season. He began Athletic’s opening league fixture against Barcelona on the bench.

He came on late.

Within moments, Ander Capa crossed from the right and Aduriz launched himself into an overhead kick that flew beyond Ter Stegen.

San Mamés briefly lost its collective mind.

Athletic won 1-0 in front of 47,693 spectators, which the club later reported as its highest attendance of 2019.

For me, this is probably the most beautiful individual moment on the list.

The 2015 hat-trick was the greater performance. The overhead kick was pure theatre.

A 38-year-old Bilbao icon coming off the bench and scoring an acrobatic winner against Barcelona in his final season sounds suspiciously like something supporters would invent after several drinks.

Except it actually happened.

Athletic 1-0 Barcelona, 2020: Williams Strikes in Stoppage Time

By 2020, Barcelona supporters were becoming rather familiar with the particular discomfort of a cup night in Bilbao.

This quarter-final was tense rather than spectacular.

Athletic stayed compact, defended patiently and resisted the temptation to turn the match into a possession contest they were unlikely to win.

Barcelona had Messi, Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué and Marc-André ter Stegen in their starting side. Athletic had a plan.

For 92 minutes, neither side scored.

Then Ibai Gómez delivered from the right and Iñaki Williams got the crucial touch, with Sergio Busquets also involved as the ball flew beyond Ter Stegen.

San Mamés erupted.

Athletic won 1-0 and eliminated a Barcelona side that had reached the previous six Copa del Rey finals.

That context elevates the result considerably.

This was not simply another home victory. Athletic ended one of Barcelona’s most impressive sequences in Spanish cup football.

Athletic 3-2 Barcelona, 2022: Muniain’s Night

Some matches take several minutes to settle.

This one needed roughly two.

Iker Muniain curled Athletic ahead almost immediately, producing exactly the sort of start San Mamés thrives upon.

Ferran Torres equalised, but Athletic continued attacking and Iñigo Martínez appeared to have won it in the 86th minute.

Then Pedri equalised in stoppage time.

That should have broken Athletic psychologically. Instead, they went again.

Muniain converted a penalty in extra time and Athletic won 3-2.

What impressed me most about this performance was the refusal to retreat.

Athletic had just seen victory disappear in stoppage time against Barcelona, a moment that could easily have shifted the entire psychological balance of the tie.

Instead, they effectively started again.

That resilience is one of the recurring characteristics of the best Athletic performances at San Mamés.

The 2024 quarter-final deserves to stand alongside the 2015 Super Cup destruction as one of the great nights at the new San Mamés.

Gorka Guruzeta scored inside the opening minute.

Barcelona responded impressively. Robert Lewandowski equalised before Lamine Yamal put the visitors 2-1 ahead.

For a while, Barcelona appeared to have absorbed the early frenzy.

Then Athletic came back.

Oihan Sancet equalised shortly after half-time and the contest eventually went to extra time.

At that point, the Williams family decided to settle matters.

Iñaki Williams scored in the 105th minute. Nico Williams added the fourth in the 120th.

Athletic won 4-2 in front of 50,953 supporters and advanced to their fifth consecutive Copa del Rey semi-final.

They would eventually win the competition, beating Mallorca on penalties in the final.

That makes the Barcelona victory even more significant. It was not an isolated giant-killing celebrated before the campaign fizzled out. It was one of the defining matches on Athletic’s route to a long-awaited major trophy.

Ranking the Greatest Barcelona Clashes at San Mamés

Ranking football matches inevitably becomes personal, which is half the fun.

I can understand anyone putting 2024 first. It had six goals, extra time, the Williams brothers and ultimately formed part of a trophy-winning Copa campaign.

But 4-0 against the reigning European champions remains difficult to dislodge.

What the Numbers Tell Us

Looking across these seven matches produces an interesting snapshot.

This is deliberately a selection of Athletic’s greatest home clashes rather than every meeting, so it should not be mistaken for the overall head-to-head record. Barcelona have won plenty of matches at San Mamés.

What the sample does show is the nature of Athletic’s most successful approach.

They have rarely beaten Barcelona here by trying to imitate them.

The best performances have generally featured aggressive pressing, quick vertical attacks, aerial pressure, intense duels and an acceptance that the match may become messy.

Messy football can be extremely useful when your opponent would prefer everything neat.

Why Barcelona Find San Mamés So Difficult

San Mamés has often encouraged Athletic to play several percentage points above their normal level against elite opposition.

The crowd is part of it, but reducing everything to atmosphere undersells the football.

Athletic traditionally possess qualities well suited to disrupting Barcelona.

High pressing

Rather than allowing Barcelona’s defenders and midfielders unlimited time to construct attacks, Athletic have frequently pushed high and forced quicker decisions.

Direct transitions

Barcelona’s territorial dominance can leave space behind their defensive structure.

Athletic’s quickest attackers, particularly Iñaki and Nico Williams in recent years, are almost purpose-built to exploit it.

Physical intensity

Barcelona sides are rarely physically weak, despite the stereotype. But Athletic are unusually comfortable turning matches into repeated contests for loose balls, headers and second phases.

Crossing and aerial pressure

Aduriz was exceptional in this area.

Athletic could bypass Barcelona’s midfield entirely and deliver into areas where their striker could challenge defenders directly.

The crowd

And yes, eventually we have to mention it.

When Athletic start aggressively and Barcelona make an early mistake, San Mamés amplifies everything.

A tackle feels important. A corner feels dangerous. A misplaced Barcelona pass produces another surge of noise.

Footballers are not robots. That atmosphere matters.

Aduriz: Barcelona’s San Mamés Nightmare

No discussion of this fixture is complete without Aritz Aduriz.

His performances against Barcelona contain almost everything supporters loved about him.

There was the hat-trick in 2015.

There was his goal in the 2017 Copa victory.

Then came the overhead kick in 2019.

Aduriz represented an interesting tactical problem for Barcelona because Athletic did not necessarily need prolonged possession to involve him. Crosses, long passes and second balls could immediately bring their centre-forward into the match.

He was physical without being crude, technically far better than he was sometimes credited for, and outstanding in the air.

Most importantly, he seemed entirely unimpressed by reputations.

Against Barcelona at San Mamés, that was a useful personality trait.

From Aduriz to the Williams Brothers

There is also a satisfying progression through these matches.

The first great period at the new stadium belonged largely to Muniain and Aduriz.

Then Iñaki Williams emerged as another Barcelona tormentor.

By 2024, Iñaki and Nico were deciding a Copa quarter-final together.

That evolution says something important about Athletic’s model.

The personnel change, but the identity remains surprisingly recognisable.

Muniain, Williams, Sancet and Guruzeta all came through Lezama. Athletic’s ability to keep producing players capable of competing with clubs possessing vastly greater recruitment markets remains one of European football’s more remarkable ongoing experiments.

You do not have to support Athletic to admire it.

Although after a cup night at San Mamés, you may find yourself doing so temporarily.

San Mamés and the Copa del Rey

There is another reason Barcelona matches here feel different.

The Copa del Rey means an enormous amount to Athletic.

Only Barcelona have won the competition more often, and Athletic’s historical association with the tournament predates modern European football.

That history gives cup nights at San Mamés an additional weight.

Barcelona have experienced it repeatedly.

The 2017 victory provided the warning. The 2020 quarter-final delivered elimination. The 2022 tie became an extra-time classic. The 2024 quarter-final somehow managed to be even more dramatic.

Four matches.

Four Athletic victories at San Mamés.

Barcelona remain the most successful club in Copa del Rey history, but Bilbao is about the last place I would choose for an away knockout tie.

Which Was the Greatest Night?

The 2024 match was arguably the best game.

The 2019 Aduriz goal was arguably the best moment.

The 2020 Williams winner produced one of the greatest explosions of noise.

But the 4-0 victory in 2015 remains my choice for the greatest Barcelona clash at the modern San Mamés.

Context decides it.

Barcelona had won the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey in 2014/15. They arrived in Bilbao as European champions with Lionel Messi in their starting XI.

Athletic scored four.

San José lobbed Ter Stegen from extraordinary range and Aduriz scored a hat-trick.

Some famous victories require years of nostalgia before they begin to feel legendary.

That one managed it before the final whistle.

A Fixture Worth Watching

Barcelona against Athletic Club does not carry the political weight of El Clásico or the local hostility of a traditional derby.

It offers something different.

These are two historic clubs with completely different approaches to building football teams, meeting in one of Spain’s most distinctive stadiums.

Barcelona bring global recruitment, extraordinary academy talent and expectations shaped by decades of trophies.

Athletic bring Lezama, a unique recruitment philosophy and 50,000 people who appear to regard Barcelona’s arrival as a personal challenge.

Sometimes Barcelona win comfortably.

Sometimes San Mamés produces something ridiculous.

That possibility is why I never skip this fixture.

Across the first 20 Premier League meetings between the clubs at the stadium, Arsenal won 14. Everton won once.

That single statistic does a rather efficient job of explaining the relationship.

Everton have occasionally frustrated Arsenal, sometimes seriously. They have produced draws, taken unexpected leads and, on one particularly strange evening in 2021, finally escaped with all three points. More commonly, however, a trip to the Emirates has ended with Everton attempting to work out precisely when the afternoon got away from them.

Here is how the story developed.

Everton’s Premier League Record at Emirates Stadium

From Arsenal’s first season at the Emirates in 2006/07 through to the 2025/26 campaign, Everton played 20 Premier League matches at the stadium.

The aggregate score of 41-14 to Arsenal is perhaps the most revealing figure.

Everton have conceded almost three times as many goals as they have scored at the ground. Arsenal have averaged just over two goals per meeting, while Everton have averaged 0.7.

There has also been an FA Cup meeting. Arsenal beat Everton 4-1 in the 2014 quarter-final, making the overall competitive picture at the Emirates even more favourable to the Gunners.

Every Everton Premier League Visit to the Emirates

What stands out is not simply the number of Arsenal victories. It is Everton’s inability to turn competitive performances into wins.

The Toffees drew four of their first eight Premier League visits. At that point, the Emirates was difficult territory rather than completely hostile territory.

Then the balance shifted heavily towards Arsenal.

2006: Everton Spoil the Early Emirates Mood

Everton’s first Premier League visit to the Emirates came on 28 October 2006.

The stadium itself was only a few months old. Arsenal were still becoming accustomed to their enormous new home and Everton took advantage, earning a 1-1 draw.

It established what became Everton’s most successful formula in north London: stay organised, concede territory where necessary and make Arsenal work for everything.

There have been afternoons when Everton tried to play Arsenal more openly at the Emirates.

Most of those are not remembered fondly on Merseyside.

2009/10: Everton Come Close

One of Everton’s strongest early performances came in January 2010.

Leon Osman put the visitors ahead before Denilson equalised. Steven Pienaar then produced one of the finest Everton goals scored at the Emirates, breaking forward and delicately lifting his finish beyond Manuel Almunia.

Everton were heading towards a notable victory until Tomas Rosicky’s deflected late effort rescued Arsenal.

Arsenal 2-2 Everton.

For Everton supporters, this was one of those matches that felt considerably less satisfying at full time than a draw at Arsenal normally should.

The opportunity had been there.

2011: Controversy and an Arsenal Comeback

The February 2011 meeting produced considerably more aggravation.

Louis Saha gave Everton the lead with a goal Arsenal believed should have been ruled out for offside. Arsenal’s own contemporary match report described the goal as highly controversial.

Everton then attempted to protect the advantage against an Arsenal side chasing Manchester United in the title race.

They held out until the 70th minute.

Andrey Arshavin equalised before Laurent Koscielny headed Arsenal ahead five minutes later.

Arsenal 2-1 Everton.

It became an early example of a recurring problem for Everton at this ground. Keeping Arsenal quiet for an hour was one thing. Keeping them quiet for 90 minutes was quite another.

2013/14: Everton Show Their Quality

The Everton side Roberto Martínez brought to the Emirates in December 2013 was different.

They were confident, technically accomplished and prepared to play.

Mesut Özil appeared to have won the match for Arsenal with an 80th-minute goal, only for Gerard Deulofeu to produce a superb equaliser four minutes later.

The 1-1 draw felt deserved.

Everton eventually finished fifth that season with 72 points, and their performance in north London showed why. This was not a team simply trying to survive an away fixture against Arsenal.

They looked capable of hurting them.

2014: Arsenal End Everton’s FA Cup Run

Three months later, the clubs returned to the Emirates for an FA Cup quarter-final.

This time there was no draw.

Arsenal won 4-1.

Everton briefly threatened to make a contest of it when Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Mesut Özil’s opener, but Arsenal eventually pulled away.

The scoreline was harsh on Everton for portions of the game, but the final stages became increasingly comfortable for Arsenal.

The Gunners went on to win the FA Cup, ending their nine-year wait for a major trophy.

For Everton, it remains another entry in the rather thick folder marked Things That Went Wrong at the Emirates.

2017: Arsenal Win but Miss the Champions League

The final day of the 2016/17 season produced a strange afternoon.

Arsenal needed victory while hoping Liverpool would slip up in the race for Champions League qualification.

Héctor Bellerín put Arsenal ahead before Laurent Koscielny was sent off. Alexis Sánchez doubled the lead despite the numerical disadvantage.

Romelu Lukaku converted a penalty for Everton, but Aaron Ramsey’s superb late strike completed a 3-1 Arsenal victory.

It was not enough.

Liverpool won their match and Arsenal finished outside the Champions League places.

Everton had lost, Arsenal had won, and somehow nobody seemed particularly delighted.

Football can be efficient like that.

2018: Aubameyang’s Home Debut and a 5-1 Hammering

Everton’s February 2018 visit was considerably less complicated.

Arsenal demolished them.

Aaron Ramsey scored a hat-trick. Laurent Koscielny added another and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored on his Arsenal debut.

By half-time it was 4-0.

Everton eventually lost 5-1.

What made the defeat particularly uncomfortable was the ease with which Arsenal moved through Everton’s defensive structure. Henrikh Mkhitaryan supplied three assists and Arsenal’s attacking players repeatedly found space between Everton’s midfield and defence.

It remains one of the clearest examples of what could happen when Everton’s disciplined approach at the Emirates disappeared.

2020: Five Goals and Arteta Against Ancelotti

The February 2020 meeting now feels like a little time capsule.

Mikel Arteta was rebuilding Arsenal. Carlo Ancelotti was attempting something similar at Everton.

Everton scored after less than a minute through Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Eddie Nketiah equalised and Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead, only for Richarlison to make it 2-2 before half-time.

Aubameyang scored again immediately after the restart.

Arsenal 3-2 Everton.

There were periods when Everton looked dangerous, particularly when attacking an Arsenal defence that was still far from secure. Yet again, though, Arsenal possessed the greater cutting edge.

2021: Everton Finally Win at the Emirates

Then came the exception.

On 23 April 2021, Everton finally won a Premier League match at Emirates Stadium.

And naturally, after years of trying, the decisive goal was an Arsenal own goal.

Richarlison drove the ball across the area and goalkeeper Bernd Leno made a dreadful mistake, allowing it through his hands and into the net.

Arsenal 0-1 Everton.

There were no travelling supporters present because of COVID-19 restrictions.

So Everton waited 15 years to win a league match at the Emirates and their fans were not allowed inside to see it.

If you wanted to design an Everton statistic in a laboratory, you would struggle to improve upon that.

The victory was significant nonetheless. Carlo Ancelotti’s side completed a league double over Arsenal that season and briefly appeared capable of challenging for European qualification.

2022: Arsenal Respond with Five

Everton’s next trip produced the opposite experience.

By the final day of the 2021/22 season, Frank Lampard’s side had already secured Premier League survival after a dramatic victory over Crystal Palace.

Arsenal still had an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

The difference in motivation showed.

Arsenal won 5-1, with Gabriel Martinelli, Eddie Nketiah, Cédric Soares, Gabriel Magalhães and Martin Ødegaard scoring.

It was Everton’s joint-heaviest Premier League defeat at the Emirates.

2023: Arteta’s Arsenal Take Control

Everton had beaten Arsenal 1-0 at Goodison Park in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge in February 2023.

The return match one month later was rather different.

Arsenal won 4-0.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring before Gabriel Martinelli struck either side of an Ødegaard goal.

This was Arsenal during the first serious title challenge of the Arteta era, and the tactical contrast was obvious.

Everton attempted to remain compact and restrict space centrally. Arsenal’s ability to switch play, isolate defenders and attack the width of the penalty area gradually dismantled the plan.

Once the first goal arrived, Everton had little answer.

2024: Arsenal Win but Lose the Title

Perhaps the most emotionally unusual Arsenal-Everton match at the Emirates arrived on 19 May 2024.

It was the final day of the season.

Arsenal still had a chance of winning the Premier League, but Manchester City controlled their own destiny against West Ham.

Everton took the lead through Idrissa Gueye’s deflected free kick.

Takehiro Tomiyasu equalised before Kai Havertz scored an 89th-minute winner.

Arsenal 2-1 Everton.

Normally, an 89th-minute winner on the final day would have sent the stadium into delirium.

Instead, news from Manchester had already made the situation clear. City won 3-1 and became champions.

Arsenal finished on 89 points.

Everton had lost the match, but in a peculiar way they had been supporting actors in one of the defining afternoons of the Arteta era.

2024/25: Everton Shut Arsenal Out

The following meeting was almost the complete opposite.

Everton held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw in December 2024.

There was nothing spectacular about Everton’s attacking contribution. That was hardly the point.

They frustrated Arsenal, defended their penalty area and prevented the home side from converting territorial superiority into goals.

For Everton, this is historically the approach that has worked best at the Emirates.

Trying to outgun Arsenal has usually ended badly. Making the game ugly, narrow and irritating has produced considerably better results.

2026: Arsenal Leave It Very Late

The Premier League meeting on 14 March 2026 looked destined to finish goalless.

Everton resisted until the 89th minute before Viktor Gyökeres finally broke the deadlock. Max Dowman added another deep into stoppage time to complete a 2-0 Arsenal victory.

The official attendance was 60,176. Arsenal’s victory extended their unbeaten Premier League run against Everton to seven matches, with five wins during that sequence.

It was another example of the problem Everton have repeatedly encountered here.

Defending well for 80 minutes does not appear anywhere on the league table.

Why Have Everton Struggled So Much at the Emirates?

The numbers are too substantial to dismiss as coincidence.

Arsenal’s 14 wins from the first 20 Emirates league meetings represent a 70 per cent win rate for the home side.

Everton’s win rate is 5 per cent.

There are several reasons.

First, Arsenal have generally been the stronger side across the Emirates era. Even during relatively weaker Arsenal periods, Everton were often operating with fewer financial resources and less squad depth.

The stylistic match-up has mattered too.

Everton teams under David Moyes, Roberto Martínez, Ronald Koeman, Carlo Ancelotti and Sean Dyche have approached Arsenal in very different ways. Yet the most successful performances tended to share one characteristic: Everton denied Arsenal space rather than trying to dominate possession.

The 0-0 draws in 2013 and 2024 are useful examples.

Once Everton have been forced to chase matches, the Emirates has frequently become a deeply unpleasant place for them.

Everton’s Scoring Problem in North London

Everton scored only 14 goals in their first 20 Premier League visits to Emirates Stadium.

More tellingly, they failed to score in eight of those matches.

The distribution is revealing.

Everton have never scored three Premier League goals in a match at the Emirates.

Their attacking ceiling has been remarkably low.

Even when Everton have played well, they have rarely built the kind of two or three-goal cushion that allows an away team to survive an Arsenal response.

Arsenal’s Heavy Wins

Everton have suffered several particularly damaging afternoons.

Ramsey’s hat-trick and Aubameyang’s debut goal turned this into one of Everton’s worst Emirates performances.

Five different Arsenal scorers completed another miserable final-day visit.

Arsenal 4-0 Everton, 2023

Everton had beaten Arsenal only weeks earlier. The response in north London was emphatic.

Add the 4-1 FA Cup defeat in 2014 and a pattern becomes fairly difficult to ignore.

When Arsenal have opened Everton up at the Emirates, they have occasionally done so with enthusiasm bordering on the impolite.

The Emirates Compared with Goodison Park

This is where the rivalry becomes more interesting.

Everton’s difficulties at the Emirates do not mean Arsenal have always enjoyed playing Everton.

Goodison Park became a particularly awkward destination for Arsenal.

Everton beat them there in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023, while other visits became physically demanding, low-scoring contests. Arsenal’s historical dominance of the fixture was much less obvious on Merseyside.

That contrast says something about home advantage, but also about Everton.

At Goodison, the crowd could turn an Arsenal match into an emotional, aggressive contest. Everton could press, tackle and attack with the stadium behind them.

At the Emirates, they were usually required to absorb Arsenal pressure instead.

The same fixture could feel like an entirely different sport depending on which train station you got off at.

The Fan Perspective

There is something slightly deceptive about Arsenal against Everton at the Emirates.

Looking through the results makes it appear routine. Watching many of the matches did not.

Everton have often been irritatingly difficult opponents. They have defended deep, slowed Arsenal’s rhythm and produced enough moments on the counterattack to keep the crowd nervous.

But the psychological expectation has changed.

In the early Emirates years, Everton arriving in north London felt like a genuinely awkward fixture. By the later Wenger years and especially under Arteta, the expectation increasingly became that Arsenal should win.

That is quite a shift.

A 1-1 draw in 2006 was respectable for Everton.

A 0-0 draw in 2024 felt like Arsenal had dropped two points.

Same clubs, same stadium, completely different expectations.

The Best Everton Performance at the Emirates

There are several candidates.

The 2-2 draw in 2010 featured Everton twice taking the lead. The 1-1 performance under Martínez in 2013 demonstrated genuine ambition and technical quality. The defensive display in 2024 was impressive in a completely different way.

But the obvious answer remains the 1-0 victory in April 2021.

It has to.

It remains Everton’s only Premier League victory at the Emirates from their first 20 attempts.

The manner of the winner was hardly majestic. Nobody will be commissioning an oil painting of Bernd Leno fumbling the ball into his own net.

Everton supporters probably do not care.

What the Numbers Tell Us

The Emirates era has transformed this particular part of the Arsenal-Everton rivalry.

Across the first 20 Premier League meetings at the stadium:

• Arsenal took 47 points from a possible 60
• Everton took 8 points from a possible 60
• Arsenal won 70 per cent of the matches
• Everton won 5 per cent
• Arsenal outscored Everton 41-14
• Everton failed to score in 40 per cent of their visits
• Arsenal scored at least four goals on three occasions
• Everton never scored more than twice

That is sustained dominance rather than a favourable run.

Perhaps the strangest part is that Everton have frequently been much more troublesome for Arsenal elsewhere. Goodison Park repeatedly caused Arsenal problems during periods when Everton could barely buy a result at the Emirates.

Football rivalries are rarely symmetrical.

This one certainly isn’t.

Everton at Emirates Stadium: The Verdict

Everton’s history at Emirates Stadium is a story of stubborn resistance punctuated by some fairly brutal Arsenal victories.

There have been good Everton performances. There have been memorable goals. There have been draws that felt like victories and defeats that were closer than the scoreline suggests.

There has also been one actual victory.

One.

Across two decades.

For Arsenal supporters, Everton at home has developed into a fixture carrying an expectation of three points. For Everton supporters, the Emirates has represented one of the more stubborn entries on the Premier League travel calendar.

That could change. Football has an amusing habit of eventually humiliating anyone confident enough to declare a pattern permanent.

But after the first 20 Premier League meetings at the Emirates, the numbers are difficult to argue with.

Arsenal have owned this fixture in north London.

The Packers had Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, 11 championships and arguably the most evocative stadium in American football. They also had a much more immediate problem. They had spent most of the previous 24 seasons being fairly ordinary.

Between 1968 and 1991, Green Bay produced only four winning seasons. Lambeau Field still had the history, frozen breath and aluminum benches, but visiting teams were not exactly trembling at the prospect of playing there.

Holmgren helped change that.

Across seven seasons from 1992 through 1998, his Packers went 75-37 in the regular season and 9-5 in the playoffs. More remarkably, Green Bay went 47-5 at Lambeau Field including postseason games during his tenure.

That works out at a winning percentage of roughly 90.4 percent.

For a generation of Packers fans, this was when Lambeau stopped being primarily a monument to the Lombardi years and became intimidating again.

Green Bay Before Holmgren

To understand Holmgren’s impact on Lambeau, you need to remember what the Packers looked like before he walked through the door.

Green Bay had reached the playoffs just twice between Lombardi’s departure and Holmgren’s appointment, following the 1972 and strike-shortened 1982 seasons.

The home advantage was nothing particularly frightening either. From 1985 through 1991, the Packers went just 2-7 in December games at Lambeau Field. In 1986 they went 0-5 there and scored only three touchdowns in those five games.

Cold weather is considerably less intimidating when the home team is losing too.

Then came a sequence of decisions that changed the franchise.

Ron Wolf became general manager in late 1991. Holmgren, previously offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, was hired as head coach on January 11, 1992. A month later, Wolf traded a first-round pick to Atlanta for a young quarterback named Brett Favre.

Not a bad few weeks at the office.

Holmgren, Favre and the Beginning of Something

Holmgren came from Bill Walsh’s coaching tree and brought a version of the West Coast offense to Wisconsin.

The principles were relatively simple: accurate passing, timing routes, yards after the catch and using short throws as an extension of the running game.

Then he gave the controls to Brett Favre.

Which was a little like teaching somebody classical piano before discovering they occasionally preferred throwing the piano through a window.

Favre’s talent was obvious. So was his willingness to attempt passes that would make an offensive coordinator develop a nervous twitch.

Holmgren provided structure.

Their relationship became one of the defining coach-quarterback partnerships of the 1990s. Holmgren could design the offense, correct Favre’s mechanics and attempt to contain his more spectacular impulses. Favre could then occasionally ignore all of that and produce something ridiculous.

It worked.

Green Bay finished 9-7 in 1992, five wins better than the previous season. Holmgren became only the third Packers head coach to produce a winning record in his first year.

The rebuilding project was already moving faster than expected.

The Game That Started the Favre Era

One of the most important games of the entire Holmgren era came at Lambeau on September 20, 1992.

Green Bay was playing Cincinnati when starting quarterback Don Majkowski injured his ankle.

Favre entered.

With the Packers trailing 23-17 late in the fourth quarter, Favre led a dramatic comeback, eventually throwing the winning touchdown pass to Kitrick Taylor with 13 seconds remaining.

It wasn’t technically Favre’s first appearance as a Packer, but culturally this was the beginning.

The following week he started against Pittsburgh.

He wouldn’t miss another Packers start for 16 years.

Looking back, that Cincinnati game feels almost suspiciously neat. The quarterback who would define modern Green Bay football effectively announced himself at Lambeau Field, under the coach who would teach him how to become an NFL MVP.

Hollywood would probably reject the script for being a bit obvious.

Reggie White Changed the Packers Too

The Holmgren era is understandably associated with Favre, but the transformation of Green Bay required another superstar.

In 1993 the Packers signed Reggie White.

This was enormous.

White was arguably the most coveted player available during the NFL’s new era of unrestricted free agency. His decision to join Green Bay demonstrated that elite players could willingly choose Wisconsin.

The Packers suddenly possessed a franchise quarterback and one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history.

White’s presence also changed what Lambeau felt like.

Green Bay no longer needed Favre to win every game by improvisational chaos. The Packers could pressure quarterbacks, control games defensively and physically overwhelm opponents.

Holmgren’s Packers were known for their offense, but their championship team was far more balanced than nostalgia sometimes suggests.

The Lambeau Leap Arrives

Another piece of modern Lambeau culture appeared during Holmgren’s second season.

On December 26, 1993, Green Bay hosted the Los Angeles Raiders in brutal conditions. The wind chill was approximately minus 22°F.

LeRoy Butler forced a fumble, Reggie White recovered it and lateraled the ball back to Butler, who scored.

Butler then jumped into the stands.

The Lambeau Leap was born.

Green Bay won 28-0 and secured its first playoff berth since 1982.

For all the tactical analysis surrounding Holmgren’s tenure, moments like this mattered. The Packers were rebuilding an identity around Lambeau itself.

Cold weather, defensive football, Favre’s recklessness, fans hanging over the wall and a stadium increasingly becoming part of the team’s competitive personality.

The Packers Finally Leave Milwaukee

One of the most significant developments of the Holmgren era had little to do with coaching.

For decades, Green Bay split its home schedule between Green Bay and Milwaukee.

That ended after the 1994 season.

Beginning in 1995, every Packers home game would be played at Lambeau Field for the first time since 1932.

That decision strengthened the relationship between the modern Packers and their historic stadium.

And the timing couldn’t have been better.

Green Bay was about to become one of the best teams in football.

Holmgren’s Packers at Lambeau by the Numbers

The 25-game Lambeau winning streak became a franchise record and, at the time, the second-longest home winning streak in NFL history.

That’s the statistic that best captures what changed.

Before Holmgren, playing at Lambeau carried historical significance.

Under Holmgren, playing at Lambeau became a competitive problem.

1995: The Packers Become Contenders

Green Bay’s progression under Holmgren was remarkably steady.

The Packers went 9-7 in each of Holmgren’s first three seasons before breaking through in 1995.

They finished 11-5, winning their first NFC Central championship since 1972.

The division title was clinched at Lambeau on Christmas Eve with a 24-19 victory over Pittsburgh. Green Bay then beat Atlanta 37-20 at Lambeau in the Wild Card round.

The Packers eventually reached the NFC Championship Game, where Dallas ended their season.

But something had clearly changed.

Green Bay wasn’t rebuilding anymore.

It was chasing championships.

1996: Lambeau Becomes the Centre of the NFL Again

The 1996 Packers were Holmgren’s masterpiece.

Green Bay finished 13-3, ranked first in the NFL in scoring offense and first in scoring defense, and secured home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs.

That last part mattered enormously.

The road to the Super Bowl went through Wisconsin.

The Packers beat San Francisco 35-14 in the divisional round at Lambeau before facing Carolina in the NFC Championship Game.

On January 12, 1997, Green Bay defeated the Panthers 30-13.

For the first time since the Lombardi era, the Packers were going back to the Super Bowl.

And they had earned the trip at Lambeau.

That image remains one of the defining scenes of modern Packers history: players celebrating on a freezing field while the stadium realised its team was finally going back to football’s biggest game.

Super Bowl XXXI

Two weeks later, Green Bay defeated New England 35-21 in Super Bowl XXXI.

Favre threw two touchdown passes and ran for another.

Desmond Howard produced the game’s decisive moment with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown.

Reggie White recorded three sacks.

The Packers were champions again.

Their previous title had come following the 1967 season.

For an organization whose identity was built around championships, that 29-year wait had become uncomfortable. Holmgren’s team finally ended it.

Lambeau could stop living entirely on black-and-white footage of Lombardi.

It had its own championship generation.

1997: Almost a Dynasty

Green Bay might actually have been better during stretches of the following season.

The Packers again finished 13-3.

They returned to the NFC Championship Game and beat San Francisco 23-10 at Candlestick Park, earning a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.

They were heavily favoured against Denver in Super Bowl XXXII.

Then Terrell Davis happened.

Denver won 31-24.

For Packers fans of a certain age, this remains one of those games that can still trigger an involuntary facial expression.

Had Green Bay won, Holmgren would have delivered consecutive championships and potentially established the Packers as the defining NFC dynasty of the late 1990s.

Instead, they became a great team with one championship rather than a dynasty.

That distinction still shapes how Holmgren’s Packers are remembered.

The 25-Game Lambeau Winning Streak

Perhaps the most impressive achievement of Holmgren’s tenure wasn’t the Super Bowl.

It was what happened at home.

Between 1995 and 1998, Green Bay won 25 consecutive games at Lambeau Field.

The streak finally ended on October 5, 1998, when Minnesota defeated Green Bay 37-24.

Randy Moss caught five passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns that night.

If you’re going to end a historic home winning streak, apparently having a rookie Randy Moss is a useful starting point.

The streak showed how thoroughly the Packers had reclaimed Lambeau.

Opponents weren’t simply dealing with cold weather. They were dealing with Favre, White, Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks, Dorsey Levens, Gilbert Brown and a team that genuinely expected to win every time it walked onto that field.

That expectation matters in sports.

Lambeau had developed psychological weight again.

Lambeau Was Changing Around Holmgren

The stadium itself evolved considerably during Holmgren’s tenure.

When Holmgren arrived, Lambeau’s capacity was around 59,500.

A major addition to the Packers’ administrative building was completed in 1993, including expanded team facilities and a much larger Pro Shop. A Sony Jumbotron was also installed that year.

In 1995, another 90 suites were added to the north end zone, increasing capacity to 60,890.

These weren’t cosmetic changes.

Green Bay needed to increase revenue while competing against franchises operating in much larger metropolitan markets.

The modernisation of Lambeau therefore paralleled the modernisation of the Packers themselves.

They were preserving the old bowl while quietly building a more sophisticated NFL business around it.

A very Green Bay solution, really. Keep the aluminum benches, add luxury suites.

Why Holmgren’s Offense Worked So Well at Lambeau

There’s an assumption that cold-weather football requires running the ball 47 times while everyone develops frostbite.

Holmgren’s Packers offered a slightly different argument.

His West Coast system relied heavily on short and intermediate passing, precise timing and receivers creating yards after the catch.

That actually suited Lambeau rather well.

Instead of relying exclusively on deep passing in difficult winter conditions, Green Bay could attack horizontally and control possession through shorter throws.

Favre’s arm strength provided another advantage. Wind and cold affect passing offenses, but having a quarterback capable of firing the football through Wisconsin weather certainly helps.

The Packers could therefore maintain a sophisticated passing game deep into December.

Meanwhile, opponents frequently had to adjust to conditions Green Bay regarded as normal.

The Numbers Behind the Transformation

Holmgren’s overall Green Bay record was 84-42, including postseason play.

That’s a .667 winning percentage.

At Lambeau, however, the Packers went 47-5.

That’s .904.

The difference is enormous.

For context, the Packers’ broader transformation beginning in 1992 became one of the most successful sustained runs in modern NFL history. Green Bay has owned the NFL’s best regular-season winning percentage over the period beginning with the Wolf-Holmgren revival through recent seasons.

Holmgren didn’t merely produce a good seven-year stretch.

He helped establish the foundation for more than three decades of competitive Packers football.

Why Lambeau Mattered to Holmgren’s Packers

Home-field advantage is sometimes discussed like it’s a mystical force generated by noise and expensive beer.

Usually there’s something more practical happening.

For Holmgren’s Packers, Lambeau provided several genuine advantages.

Green Bay understood the surface and weather. The Packers increasingly played meaningful late-season games there. The crowd became louder as expectations increased. Visiting teams faced one of football’s best quarterbacks and one of its best defenses.

Most importantly, Green Bay was simply very good.

The mythology grew because the football justified it.

That’s the crucial distinction.

Lambeau didn’t make Holmgren’s Packers great.

Holmgren’s Packers made Lambeau frightening again.

Holmgren Leaves Green Bay

The 1998 season produced another 11-5 record and Green Bay’s sixth consecutive playoff appearance.

But the Packers were eliminated in heartbreaking fashion by San Francisco.

Favre had driven Green Bay ahead 27-23 late in the fourth quarter before Steve Young found Terrell Owens for a 25-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining.

San Francisco won 30-27.

Five days later, Holmgren resigned.

He became head coach and executive vice president of football operations with the Seattle Seahawks, gaining the personnel authority he wanted.

His Green Bay tenure was over after seven seasons.

There would be no gradual decline, awkward rebuilding cycle or farewell season.

He simply left.

Holmgren’s Lambeau Legacy

Holmgren’s importance to Green Bay goes beyond Super Bowl XXXI.

He arrived when the Packers were historically important but contemporarily irrelevant.

He left with:

• Seven consecutive winning seasons
• Six consecutive playoff appearances
• Three consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances
• Two NFC championships
• One Super Bowl victory
• A 47-5 record at Lambeau including playoffs
• A 25-game home winning streak

More importantly, he helped connect two versions of the Packers.

There was the old Green Bay, defined by Lambeau, Lombardi and championships from another era.

Then there was the modern franchise built around Wolf, Holmgren, Favre and White.

Lambeau Field was the bridge between them.

From Historic Stadium to Modern Fortress

I’ve always thought the most interesting thing about Holmgren’s Green Bay years is that he didn’t need to manufacture Packers tradition.

There was already enough tradition in that building to fill several documentaries and approximately 400 hours of NFL Films narration.

What Green Bay needed was relevance.

Holmgren gave Lambeau contemporary memories.

Favre’s emergence against Cincinnati. The birth of the Lambeau Leap. Reggie White terrorising quarterbacks. December games that actually mattered. Playoff football returning to Wisconsin. The NFC Championship victory over Carolina. Fans watching their team become champions again.

Those moments changed the meaning of Lambeau Field for an entire generation.

The Lombardi years remained sacred.

But by the late 1990s, Packers fans no longer needed their fathers or grandfathers to explain what championship football at Lambeau felt like.

They had seen it themselves.

And Mike Holmgren had a lot to do with that.

The result is a ground squeezed into west London, surrounded by housing, pubs, restaurants, railway lines and some of the most expensive property in Britain. It makes getting 40,000-plus football supporters in and out of the area slightly chaotic, but it also gives Stamford Bridge something many modern stadiums struggle to manufacture: a proper sense of place.

A Chelsea matchday begins well before you reach the turnstiles. Fulham Broadway fills with blue shirts, Fulham Road gets progressively busier, pubs become increasingly optimistic about their remaining floor space, and eventually Stamford Bridge appears between the buildings.

For a first visit, it can actually be surprising how suddenly the stadium arrives.

Here is what to expect.

Stamford Bridge Matchday at a Glance

The relatively modest capacity is important. Stamford Bridge feels very different from the huge modern grounds built for 60,000 or more spectators.

You are closer to the pitch, the stands feel enclosed and the atmosphere can become surprisingly intense when Chelsea are playing well.

Getting to Stamford Bridge

For most supporters, Fulham Broadway Underground station is the obvious choice.

It sits on the District line and is only a few minutes’ walk from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea describe the ground as one of London’s most centrally located major football stadiums, and in practical terms they have a point.

Coming from central London, you will normally travel towards Wimbledon on the District line. If your train is heading elsewhere, changing at Earl’s Court is usually straightforward.

West Brompton is another useful option. It is served by London Overground and is roughly a 15-minute walk from Stamford Bridge.

The Tube journey itself tends to provide an unofficial warning that you are getting close. A carriage that looked perfectly civilised ten minutes earlier gradually becomes populated by Chelsea shirts.

Then everyone gets off at once.

Should you drive?

I wouldn’t.

Parking around Stamford Bridge is extremely limited and Chelsea themselves recommend using public transport. There are also resident parking restrictions around the area.

Fulham Road can also close at least 90 minutes before kick-off and remain closed until around an hour after the final whistle for some matchday operations.

Unless you have a very specific reason to bring a car, the Underground is considerably less painful.

Arriving Around Fulham Broadway

One of the pleasures of Stamford Bridge is that the matchday doesn’t feel separated from London.

Some newer stadiums are surrounded by plazas, retail parks and carefully landscaped pedestrian zones. Stamford Bridge spills directly into Fulham.

That changes the experience.

The pubs and restaurants around Fulham Broadway become increasingly busy several hours before kick-off. Supporters stream along Fulham Road, while the closer you get to the stadium, the more obvious the Chelsea presence becomes.

If it’s your first visit, I’d arrive at least 90 minutes before kick-off.

That gives you enough time to walk around the stadium, visit the club shop, get something to eat and find your entrance without turning the final 15 minutes into an Olympic walking event.

Walking Around Stamford Bridge Before the Match

Stamford Bridge isn’t the easiest stadium to appreciate architecturally from outside.

The ground has been redeveloped gradually rather than created as one enormous unified project. Hotels, restaurants and other buildings form part of the wider Stamford Bridge complex, meaning you don’t always get the dramatic full-stadium view offered by places such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There are still several things worth seeing.

The Shed Wall celebrates important figures from Chelsea’s history with images, statistics and information about former players. It occupies part of the historic southern boundary of the site and is free to view.

The Stamford Bridge Megastore is also here if you fancy discovering just how many objects can legally have a Chelsea badge attached to them.

For a first-time visitor, I would allow 20 to 30 minutes simply to wander around.

The Four Stands

Stamford Bridge consists of four main stands, each offering a slightly different experience.

Matthew Harding Stand

For atmosphere, this would be my choice.

Named after former Chelsea vice-chairman Matthew Harding, who died in a helicopter crash in 1996, the stand behind the north goal contains some of Chelsea’s most vocal supporters.

The lower tier in particular can be excellent.

When Stamford Bridge is properly alive, a lot of the noise begins here.

The Shed End

The Shed carries enormous historical significance.

The original Shed terrace became synonymous with Chelsea’s hardcore support during the twentieth century. The modern stand is very different physically, but the name remains part of the club’s identity.

Away supporters are also accommodated in this end for men’s matches, which naturally creates plenty of interaction between the two sets of fans.

East Stand

The East Stand dates from the major 1970s redevelopment of Stamford Bridge.

It is the oldest surviving major stand and its three-tier construction gives it a distinctive appearance.

There is something I quite like about it. It isn’t trying to look futuristic. It looks like a large football stand that has watched several generations of Chelsea teams come and go.

West Stand

The West Stand represents the more corporate side of modern Chelsea.

Hospitality facilities are concentrated here, while the upper tier has undergone substantial refurbishment through the Westview development, including upgraded food and drink facilities.

The view can be excellent, although supporters chasing maximum atmosphere will probably prefer the Matthew Harding Stand or Shed End.

What Is the Atmosphere Like at Stamford Bridge?

This is where Stamford Bridge can be difficult to judge.

On the right day, it is superb.

A major London derby, Champions League night or big Premier League fixture can transform the place. Because the stadium is relatively compact, noise doesn’t disappear upwards into enormous open spaces.

The proximity of the stands helps.

But Stamford Bridge isn’t thunderous every week.

Against less glamorous opposition, particularly during awkward lunchtime kick-offs, the atmosphere can become subdued. That’s hardly unique to Chelsea. Almost every major Premier League club suffers from the strange phenomenon of tens of thousands of people simultaneously waiting for somebody else to start singing.

The Matthew Harding Stand usually provides the most consistent vocal support.

When Chelsea score at that end, particularly in a major match, you understand why supporters remain emotionally attached to Stamford Bridge despite its obvious limitations.

How Close Are You to the Pitch?

Pretty close by modern Premier League standards.

This is one of Stamford Bridge’s greatest strengths.

The stadium wasn’t designed around an athletics track and doesn’t have the enormous gaps found at some multi-purpose venues. Sightlines vary depending on your seat, but generally the pitch feels connected to the stands.

That intimacy matters.

A 40,000-seat stadium can sometimes create a more intense football environment than a 60,000-seat venue because the crowd is physically concentrated into a smaller space.

Stamford Bridge demonstrates that quite nicely.

Safe Standing and Rail Seating

Rail seating has been installed in sections of the Matthew Harding Lower and the upper and lower tiers of the Shed End.

That is significant because these are already among the most atmospheric sections of Stamford Bridge.

Standing supporters create a noticeably different visual and acoustic environment from spectators sitting quietly in rows.

For visitors who want the traditional English football experience rather than simply the best panoramic view, these areas are particularly interesting.

Food and Drink Inside Stamford Bridge

Food inside Stamford Bridge has improved over the years, although you’re still eating inside a Premier League football stadium rather than accidentally wandering into Borough Market.

Expect the usual football staples alongside a broader selection of food and drink depending on your stand.

Chelsea has also introduced CFC Express, allowing supporters to pre-order food and drink for collection from designated points around the stadium. The system offers a considerably larger menu than standard concourse kiosks.

This is actually a sensible development.

Half-time lasts 15 minutes. Spending 11 of them standing behind somebody ordering drinks for seven people has never been one of football’s great traditions.

Stamford Bridge operates cashless payment systems, so bring a debit or credit card or use mobile contactless payment.

Bag Policy and Stadium Security

This is worth knowing before you leave home.

Chelsea currently restrict bags entering Stamford Bridge to A4 size or smaller, approximately:

30cm x 20cm x 10cm

More importantly, the club does not operate a matchday bag-drop facility.

Turn up carrying a large suitcase and you have created a fairly serious logistical problem for yourself.

My advice is simple: bring as little as possible.

Security checks also mean queues can build close to kick-off, another reason not to arrive with five minutes remaining.

Digital Tickets and Entry

Chelsea have moved towards digital ticketing and continue to tighten controls around ticket ownership and touting.

For the 2026/27 season, supporters over 16 purchasing or accessing men’s match tickets are being required to complete online identity verification. Chelsea has also changed its loyalty system so points for men’s first-team home games are awarded based on attendance, with the ticket needing to be scanned at the turnstile.

The practical lesson for visitors is straightforward.

Make sure your ticket is loaded and accessible before approaching the turnstile.

Trying to remember your password while several hundred Chelsea supporters queue behind you is character building, but unnecessary.

When Should You Enter the Stadium?

I’d aim to be through the turnstiles around 45 minutes before kick-off if it’s your first visit.

Regulars naturally leave it later because they know exactly where they’re going.

Going in earlier gives you time to find your seat, use the facilities, get food or drink and watch the teams warm up.

There is also something about watching a football ground gradually fill that I still enjoy. Empty seats become scattered groups, then entire blocks of supporters, then suddenly the teams emerge and the place looks completely different.

The Matchday Build-Up

The atmosphere noticeably changes during the final 20 minutes.

Players complete their warm-ups, supporters move from the concourses into their seats and the noise starts to build.

For major fixtures, this is when Stamford Bridge can feel particularly impressive.

The compact dimensions work in Chelsea’s favour. Noise generated behind either goal travels quickly around the stadium, while away supporters in the Shed add another layer.

Then comes kick-off.

Whatever you think about Chelsea, there aren’t many grounds where you feel quite so physically close to Premier League football.

Half-Time at Stamford Bridge

Half-time is organised chaos.

Everyone simultaneously decides they require food, drink or a toilet.

Queues form rapidly, particularly in older concourse areas. If you’re desperate for refreshments, leaving your seat a couple of minutes before half-time will save time.

Personally, I’d rather watch the football.

I’ve never understood paying Premier League ticket prices and deliberately missing part of the match because I urgently require a pie.

Pre-ordering through CFC Express is another way of reducing queue time.

What Happens After the Final Whistle?

Getting into Stamford Bridge is usually easier than getting away from it.

More than 40,000 people suddenly head towards the same handful of transport routes.

Fulham Broadway is naturally the main destination, so expect queues and crowd-management measures around the station.

If you’re not in a hurry, there is a better option.

Walk.

Earl’s Court is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away depending on your route and pace, while West Brompton offers Underground and Overground connections.

Sometimes spending 15 minutes walking through west London is considerably more pleasant than spending those same 15 minutes staring at the back of somebody’s Chelsea jacket in a station queue.

How Does Stamford Bridge Compare With Modern Premier League Stadiums?

This is where the ground becomes interesting.

Stamford Bridge is objectively constrained.

Its capacity is relatively small for a club of Chelsea’s international size. Expansion is extremely difficult because of railway lines, neighbouring properties and the dense urban environment surrounding the site.

Compare it with some major English grounds:

Chelsea are therefore operating with roughly 20,000 fewer seats than several direct Premier League rivals.

Across 19 league home matches, that potentially represents hundreds of thousands fewer available tickets over a season.

Commercially, that’s a major limitation.

Emotionally, things become more complicated.

A larger stadium would generate more matchday revenue and allow more supporters to attend. But Stamford Bridge’s compact scale and west London location are fundamental parts of Chelsea’s identity.

Replacing that isn’t simply an architectural exercise.

Is Stamford Bridge Good for Families?

Generally, yes.

Premier League football is considerably more family-oriented than it was several decades ago, and Chelsea has continued developing dedicated family provision.

For 2026/27, the East Lower North remains a designated family area for men’s matches.

Families attending for the first time should still arrive early.

Navigating crowded Tube platforms, security checks and packed concourses with younger children is much easier when you’re not racing against kick-off.

Accessibility

Fulham Broadway has step-free access, including lifts, making it the most convenient Underground station for many supporters with mobility requirements.

Chelsea also provides accessible seating and matchday assistance within Stamford Bridge.

Anyone requiring specific accessibility arrangements should contact the club before travelling, particularly when accessible parking or specialist seating is required.

Is Stamford Bridge Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

It isn’t the biggest stadium in England. It isn’t the newest. Parts of it feel constrained and the concourses can become crowded.

But that’s partly why I like it.

You still feel as though you’re attending football in the middle of a neighbourhood rather than visiting a purpose-built entertainment district.

Stamford Bridge has witnessed league titles, European nights, relegation battles, cup runs, managerial chaos and enough ownership drama to fill several television series.

The modern Chelsea era transformed the club beyond recognition, but the address stayed the same.

For supporters visiting for the first time, my advice would be to arrive early, walk down Fulham Road, spend some time around the stadium and don’t disappear immediately after the final whistle.

The football lasts 90 minutes.

The matchday is much bigger than that.

• Use Fulham Broadway unless another route clearly suits your journey better.
• Arrive around 60 to 90 minutes before kick-off.
• Avoid driving if possible.
• Bring no bag, or make certain it meets the A4 restriction.
• Have your digital ticket ready before reaching the turnstile.
• Bring a card or contactless payment method because Stamford Bridge is cashless.
• Choose the Matthew Harding Stand if atmosphere is your priority.
• Consider walking to Earl’s Court or West Brompton after particularly busy matches.
• Allow time to explore Fulham Road rather than treating the stadium as an isolated destination.
• Check Chelsea and TfL travel information on the morning of the game because London transport has a habit of developing a personality at weekends.

Most modern NFL stadiums follow one of three approaches. They are open to the weather, sealed beneath a fixed roof, or fitted with a retractable system that spends a suspicious amount of its life closed.

SoFi Stadium went another way.

The stadium sits beneath an enormous translucent canopy made partly from ETFE, a lightweight fluoropolymer that allows daylight through while providing protection from direct sun and rain. Yet the stadium itself remains open around the sides.

That distinction matters. SoFi is not really a conventional dome. It is closer to an outdoor stadium placed beneath an extraordinarily sophisticated umbrella.

And because this is Los Angeles, even the umbrella has a video display.

What Is the SoFi Stadium Roof Made From?

The transparent portion of SoFi Stadium’s roof uses ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, mercifully shortened to ETFE.

ETFE is a lightweight polymer increasingly used in large architectural projects where designers want transparency without the enormous weight associated with glass.

At SoFi, the single-layer ETFE system consists of more than 300 panels. According to architect HKS, 46 can be opened to improve ventilation depending on conditions.

The material is translucent rather than perfectly clear. A 65 percent frit pattern is incorporated into the ETFE, helping shelter spectators from direct sunlight and reducing solar heat gain while still allowing large amounts of natural light into the stadium.

That balance is important in Southern California.

A completely transparent roof over 70,000 football fans in September could rapidly start feeling less like an NFL stadium and more like a greenhouse with $18 beer.

SoFi Stadium Roof Facts

The roof also covers considerably more than the football field.

It stretches across the stadium, surrounding spaces and adjacent entertainment areas, creating a single architectural canopy over multiple parts of the Hollywood Park development.

The Roof Isn’t Actually Attached to the Stadium

This is where SoFi becomes particularly interesting.

The giant canopy and the stadium bowl are structurally independent.

SoFi does not have conventional exterior walls supporting a roof. Instead, its long-span cable roof structure is anchored to the ground at four main locations.

The stadium bowl essentially sits underneath it.

There is a serious engineering reason for this arrangement.

Southern California has earthquakes.

The roof, stadium bowl, American Airlines Plaza and neighboring theater were designed so they can move independently during seismic activity associated with the nearby Inglewood fault.

Visually, everything appears to be one enormous building.

Structurally, it is more complicated.

Very LA, really. Everyone is at the same party, but nobody wants to commit.

Why Didn’t SoFi Stadium Get a Retractable Roof?

A retractable roof would have been the obvious solution.

Dallas has one. Atlanta has one. Indianapolis has one. Arizona has one.

But Los Angeles possesses something those cities cannot reliably order from an engineering contractor: remarkably cooperative weather.

Southern California’s climate made a permanently covered but naturally ventilated stadium practical.

HKS designed SoFi around the region’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Instead of sealing spectators inside an air-conditioned building, the architects allowed air to circulate through the open sides of the structure.

The ETFE canopy handles sun and rain while the open perimeter allows prevailing breezes into the seating bowl. Some roof panels can also open to increase airflow.

In 2026, HKS described the approach as specifically adapted to LA’s temperate climate. The company says the fritted ETFE reduces solar heat gain while the open-sided bowl allows wind through the venue.

A giant retractable mechanism would therefore have introduced additional structural weight, machinery and maintenance for relatively little benefit.

The roof doesn’t need to disappear.

It needs to let Los Angeles through.

Does SoFi Stadium Have Air Conditioning?

This is one of the most common misconceptions about the stadium.

SoFi Stadium is not a conventionally air-conditioned indoor stadium.

The open sides make traditional whole-building air conditioning impractical. Instead, its environmental strategy relies heavily on shade, reduced solar gain and natural ventilation.

HKS describes 46 operable ETFE panels that can help maximize airflow without requiring conventional stadium-wide air conditioning.

That is clever engineering, but it does come with a trade-off.

SoFi can still feel warm during particularly hot Southern California weather. A roof does not magically reduce the temperature outside, especially when tens of thousands of people are sitting beneath it.

What the canopy does is reduce exposure to direct sunlight while allowing air movement.

That is quite different from walking into the refrigerated atmosphere of an enclosed stadium such as AT&T Stadium.

How the Roof Controls Heat

The ETFE membrane does more work than its almost transparent appearance suggests.

Its 65 percent frit pattern reduces direct sunlight and solar gain.

Think of fritting as thousands of tiny printed elements distributed across the surface. They alter the amount of solar radiation passing through the membrane without turning the roof opaque.

This produces a useful compromise.

Spectators still experience natural daylight and can sense the sky above them, but they are not sitting directly beneath unrestricted Southern California sunshine.

HKS says the roof is substantially cooler underneath than simply sitting in direct sunlight.

For a football stadium, that is arguably more valuable than having a roof that can dramatically slide open twice a year for television.

ETFE vs Glass

At first glance, glass might appear to be the obvious choice for a transparent stadium roof.

At SoFi’s scale, it would be an engineering headache.

Weight becomes especially important when a roof spans an enormous stadium in earthquake country.

HKS says the cable-truss strategy used at SoFi created a roof with roughly one-tenth the structural weight of a more conventional solution.

That has consequences throughout the structure.

Less roof mass means less structural material required to support it and less mass moving around during seismic events.

Suddenly the plastic roof doesn’t sound quite so cheap.

The Roof Covers More Than SoFi Stadium

One of the smartest things about the design is that the canopy isn’t simply a football stadium roof.

It forms the architectural centerpiece of the wider Hollywood Park complex.

Beneath the monumental canopy sit three distinct venues:

• SoFi Stadium
• American Airlines Plaza
• YouTube Theater

HKS designed them so different events can take place simultaneously beneath the same overall roof structure.

American Airlines Plaza alone provides a major covered outdoor event space between the stadium and theater.

This makes the roof part of the site’s commercial logic.

Building something this enormous simply to protect NFL spectators for a handful of home games would be difficult to justify. Extending it across entertainment and public spaces makes the structure useful throughout the year.

It turns the roof into infrastructure rather than decoration.

The Roof Can Also Become a Giant Screen

Naturally, someone eventually looked at several acres of translucent roofing next to LAX and thought: advertising opportunity.

LED technology integrated into the ETFE allows images and video to be displayed across sections of the roof while retaining transparency from inside.

The audience isn’t necessarily sitting in SoFi Stadium.

Some of them are several thousand feet above it.

Aircraft approaching and departing nearby Los Angeles International Airport can see roof displays from the air.

It is a wonderfully excessive Los Angeles detail.

Most stadium roofs stop rain.

SoFi’s can communicate with Boeing 777 passengers.

Why SoFi Stadium Was Built So Far Below Ground

The roof also influenced another unusual aspect of SoFi’s architecture.

The stadium is close to LAX, which meant the project faced Federal Aviation Administration height restrictions.

The solution was not to make the stadium smaller.

They dug down.

The seating bowl sits approximately 100 feet below the existing ground level, around two to three times deeper than comparable multipurpose venues according to HKS.

This allowed the enormous stadium and roof canopy to remain within aviation restrictions.

It also creates one of SoFi’s stranger arrival experiences.

Rather than climbing high into a traditional stadium, spectators gradually descend toward the seating bowl.

You can spend several minutes walking downward and still somehow end up in the cheap seats.

Architecture is capable of cruelty.

The Roof Is Part of SoFi’s Earthquake Strategy

Building a structure this large close to an active fault required seismic movement to be considered from the beginning.

The roof canopy is structurally detached from the stadium bowl and other major elements underneath it.

During an earthquake, these components can therefore respond independently rather than behaving as one enormous rigid mass.

The stadium’s partially excavated construction also affects how the building interacts with the surrounding ground.

This is one reason SoFi’s roof should be considered an engineering system rather than simply architectural styling.

Its appearance is spectacular, but its structural independence is arguably more impressive.

How SoFi Compares With Other NFL Roof Designs

SoFi represents a different branch of modern stadium design.

The comparison with U.S. Bank Stadium is particularly interesting.

Both were designed by HKS and both use ETFE, but Minneapolis and Los Angeles required completely different environmental solutions.

Minnesota needs protection from serious winter weather. Los Angeles needs shade while retaining ventilation.

Same material. Completely different job.

That is good stadium architecture because the climate dictates the building rather than somebody deciding every new NFL venue needs the same expensive party trick.

The Roof Helps Make SoFi Feel Bigger

There is another effect that does not appear neatly on an engineering spreadsheet.

Space.

Because the roof floats above an open-sided stadium, SoFi rarely feels like a traditional enclosed dome.

Daylight reaches deep into the bowl. Air circulates through the concourses. Views extend beyond the seating structure.

The roof effectively defines the building without completely enclosing it.

That helps explain why a stadium containing roughly 70,000 permanent seats can feel considerably larger than the capacity figure suggests.

The 3.1-million-square-foot building is already enormous.

The canopy makes its perceived boundaries even less obvious.

Is the Transparent Roof Worth It?

Architecturally, yes.

From a fan-comfort perspective, the answer needs slightly more qualification.

The roof provides excellent protection from direct sun and rain while retaining the atmosphere of an outdoor stadium. Natural daylight is vastly preferable to spending Sunday afternoon inside something resembling a giant convention center.

But SoFi isn’t climate controlled in the traditional sense.

On unusually hot days, you can feel it.

That is the price of the indoor-outdoor concept. Personally, I think it is a reasonable trade. Football should retain some relationship with the weather outside. Otherwise we might as well play the whole NFL season inside Costco.

The clever part is that SoFi’s roof does several jobs simultaneously.

It provides shade. It reduces solar gain. It keeps rain away from spectators. It supports natural ventilation. It helps define the wider Hollywood Park development. It contributes to the stadium’s seismic strategy. It even carries digital displays visible from the sky.

That is a lot of work for something that initially looks like a sheet of transparent plastic.

Why the SoFi Roof Matters

When SoFi Stadium opened in 2020, much of the attention understandably went toward the enormous Infinity Screen hanging above the field.

The roof may ultimately prove the more influential piece of engineering.

Retractable roofs dominated prestige stadium design for years because they offered the best of both worlds, at least theoretically. But they bring weight, moving components, maintenance requirements and considerable expense.

SoFi demonstrates another possibility.

In climates where extreme cold or heat is not the dominant concern, designers can cover the spectators without enclosing the entire building.

HKS has described SoFi as the first true indoor-outdoor stadium, and while architectural marketing departments are rarely known for understatement, the description is pretty accurate.

SoFi feels protected rather than enclosed.

That distinction is the whole point.

Los Angeles spent decades without an NFL team and then, apparently concerned it might have underdone the comeback, built one of the most technically ambitious stadiums in the world.

The roof captures the philosophy perfectly.

Huge, complicated, slightly ridiculous, technically clever and visible from LAX.

In other words, completely at home in Los Angeles.
