Best Bars Around Anoeta Stadium: Where Real Sociedad Fans Eat, Drink And Celebrate In San Sebastián

Matt Tait June 10, 2026 5 minutes read
Reale Arena bars

Anoeta Stadium, officially the Reale Arena, offers one of European football’s more underrated matchday experiences. It does not have the chaotic pub streets found around English grounds or the endless beer halls of Germany. This is the Basque Country, where football is woven together with food, conversation and a very serious appreciation for a well-made pintxo.

Home to Real Sociedad, the stadium sits in the Amara district of San Sebastián, roughly 2 kilometres south of the famous Old Town. The result is a matchday split into two parts. Many supporters spend the afternoon eating and drinking in the city centre before moving towards Anoeta, while others gather around local neighbourhood bars close to kick-off.

With San Sebastián regularly ranked among Europe’s greatest food cities, a pre-match drink here usually comes with something far better than a packet of crisps.

The Matchday Drinking Culture Around Anoeta Stadium

San Sebastián does football differently. Rather than large sports bars, the city is built around small, independent establishments.

Expect:

  • Local cider and Basque txakoli wine
  • Small glasses of beer known as zuritos
  • Pintxos served across the bar
  • Mixed groups of families, older supporters and younger fans
  • Real Sociedad colours appearing gradually as kick-off approaches

The atmosphere is passionate but generally relaxed. Real Sociedad supporters are known for strong local identity rather than aggressive matchday culture.

Best Bars Near Anoeta Stadium

Bar Txirrita

Distance from Anoeta: Around 5 minutes on foot

Bar Txirrita is one of the classic neighbourhood options near the stadium. It offers exactly what many fans want before a match, a straightforward local bar, quick drinks, food and plenty of blue-and-white shirts.

It becomes noticeably busier before Real Sociedad games, especially against Athletic Club, Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Best for:

  • Quick pre-match drinks
  • Local supporter atmosphere
  • Staying close to the stadium

Bar Arkupe

Distance from Anoeta: Around 10 minutes on foot

A traditional Basque-style bar where food plays just as important a role as drinks. Arkupe is a good example of why watching football in San Sebastián feels different from many European cities.

Instead of rushing several pints before kick-off, supporters often meet over small plates, wine and conversation.

Best for:

  • Pintxos before the game
  • A calmer matchday experience
  • Mixed groups

Bar Jose

Distance from Anoeta: Around 10 minutes on foot

A local favourite in the Amara area, Bar Jose provides a proper neighbourhood feel away from the heavier tourist areas.

It is the kind of place where regulars discuss team selection before the match and analyse missed chances afterwards.

Best for:

  • Authentic San Sebastián atmosphere
  • Avoiding tourist crowds
  • Post-match discussion

Best Bars In San Sebastián Old Town Before The Match

Many Real Sociedad supporters begin their day in Parte Vieja, the famous Old town, before travelling towards Anoeta.

The walk takes around 35 to 40 minutes, although many fans use buses or taxis.

Bar Néstor

One of San Sebastián’s most famous food stops. Bar Néstor is legendary for its simple menu, particularly steak, tomato salad and tortilla.

It is not a football bar in the traditional sense, but it represents the city perfectly. If you want a cultural pre-match experience before Real Sociedad, this is hard to beat.

Best for:

  • First-time visitors
  • Food-focused trips
  • Experiencing San Sebastián properly

Atari Gastroteka

Close to the Basilica of Saint Mary, Atari combines excellent pintxos with a lively atmosphere.

It attracts locals and visitors, making it a good choice if travelling supporters want somewhere accessible before heading towards Anoeta.

Best for:

  • Groups
  • High-quality food
  • Central location

La Mejillonera

A lively and affordable Old Town favourite known for mussels, patatas bravas and quick service.

It is louder and less polished than some of San Sebastián’s famous food temples, which actually makes it a better football-day option.

Best for:

  • Affordable food
  • Bigger groups
  • A faster stop before kick-off

Where Away Fans Should Drink Near Anoeta

Away fans generally have little trouble finding places to drink in San Sebastián. The city is welcoming, although common football etiquette applies.

For major European nights, travelling supporters usually gather around the Old Town rather than directly beside the stadium. It provides more space, more bars and easier access to the city’s main attractions.

The Anoeta area is better suited to smaller groups who want a local experience.

Prices Around Anoeta Stadium

San Sebastián has a reputation for being expensive by Spanish standards, although matchday drinking can still feel reasonable compared with major UK cities.

Typical prices:

ItemAverage Cost
Small beer (zurito)€1.50 to €2.50
Regular beer€3 to €5
Pintxo€2.50 to €5
Glass of wine€2.50 to €5
Casual meal€12 to €25

The biggest cost difference comes from location. Old Town’s famous restaurants can climb quickly, while Amara neighbourhood bars remain better value.

Before Kick-Off: When To Arrive

For normal league matches:

  • 3 hours before: Eat and drink in Old Town
  • 90 minutes before: Move towards Anoeta
  • 45 minutes before: Enjoy bars near the stadium
  • 20 minutes before: Enter the ground

The rebuilt Anoeta has massively improved the stadium experience, with the removal of the athletics track creating one of Spain’s best modern football atmospheres. Arriving early is now worthwhile.

Anoeta Offers A Proper Basque Football Day

A trip to Anoeta is less about finding the biggest sports bar and more about understanding how San Sebastián approaches football. The city does not separate matchday from everyday culture. Food, friends, family and Real Sociedad all blend together.

The best plan is simple. Eat ridiculously well, drink slowly, wander towards the stadium and enjoy one of Spain’s most distinctive football experiences.

Few places let you debate football tactics while eating some of Europe’s best food. San Sebastián somehow decided that should just be normal.
