Tips for Attending a Game at Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden, often called “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” sits at the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Whether you’re going for a Knicks game, a Rangers match, or a major event, a little preparation can turn a good night into a great one. Below is a clear and practical guide for making the most of your visit.

Plan Your Journey Wisely

MSG is built directly above Penn Station, so public transport is by far the easiest way in. The A, C, E, 1, 2, and 3 subway lines stop directly beneath it, while the Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit all arrive at Penn.

Driving is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Parking nearby is expensive and limited, and navigating Midtown traffic before or after a major event can be frustrating. If you’re staying in Manhattan, walking or using the subway will be quicker.

Arrive Early

Aim to arrive at least 45 minutes before game time. This gives you time to go through security, find your seat, and enjoy the pre-game atmosphere. It also allows for a more relaxed experience at the concessions, which fill up quickly as the start time approaches.

Know the Bag Policy

Madison Square Garden has a strict bag policy. Large bags and backpacks are not allowed. Bring only what you need, ideally in a small purse or pouch. This speeds up security checks and avoids the hassle of being turned away at the gate.

Choose Your Seating Wisely

  • Lower Bowl (100s): Best for up-close action but comes at a high price.
  • Chase Bridge (200s): Unique elevated view, especially good for hockey.
  • Upper Bowl (300s): More affordable, with a surprisingly good view for basketball and concerts.
  • Club Seats and Suites: Premium options with better amenities and fewer crowds.

Check the seating chart ahead of time, especially for events like boxing or concerts, where the layout may shift.

Food and Drink

Food inside MSG is expensive, though varied. Options include typical arena fare like hot dogs and burgers, but there are also outlets from well-known NYC eateries. Expect to pay New York prices.

If you want to save, consider eating beforehand. There are dozens of solid options nearby, including Korean BBQ on 32nd Street, pizza by the slice, or delis like Penn Station’s Moynihan Hall vendors.

Cashless Venue

MSG is entirely cashless, so make sure you bring a debit or credit card, or have your mobile wallet ready. If needed, reverse ATMs are available to convert cash to a prepaid card.

Know the Rules

Outside drinks are not allowed. Cameras with detachable lenses or professional equipment may be prohibited unless pre-approved. Alcohol is served at most events but expect ID checks and limits on how much you can purchase at once.

Accessibility and Assistance

MSG offers services for guests with disabilities, including accessible entrances, elevators, and seating areas. Assistance can be arranged in advance, and staff on-site are generally helpful.

Event Atmosphere

Knicks and Rangers games have a loyal fan base. For basketball, expect energetic chants, celebrity sightings, and strong reactions to officiating. For hockey, the crowd is intense and passionate. Respect the energy but avoid getting caught up in any altercations or unnecessary heckling. Security is present and swift to act if needed.

After the Game

If you’re not rushing to catch a train, consider waiting 15–20 minutes after the game to let the crowds thin out. You can wander the concourse, visit the gift shops, or snap a few more photos.
