How to Get to Old Trafford

Matt Tait October 20, 2025
Old Trafford Travel

Old Trafford is one of football’s great temples. Whether you’re visiting for a Premier League clash, a stadium tour, or a trip to the Megastore, getting there efficiently can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. The stadium is located in the Old Trafford district of Greater Manchester, roughly two miles southwest of the city centre.

By Train

The easiest way for many visitors is by train.

From Manchester City Centre

  • The closest mainline stations are Manchester Piccadilly, Victoria, and Oxford Road.
  • From Piccadilly, you can take a train directly to Manchester United Football Ground station, which is located right next to the stadium. Services usually run on matchdays and certain events.
  • Alternatively, hop on the Metrolink tram for a quick and convenient route.

From Other Cities

  • Direct trains to Manchester operate from major hubs such as London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street, and Leeds.
  • Once you arrive in Manchester, transfer to the Metrolink tram network or a short taxi ride to complete the journey.

By Metrolink Tram

The Metrolink is one of the most reliable and popular ways to reach Old Trafford.

  • The Old Trafford tram stop on the Altrincham line is about a ten-minute walk from the ground.
  • Alternatively, Exchange Quay and Salford Quays stops are close by and serve the MediaCityUK area, offering additional options depending on your direction of travel.
  • Trams run frequently on matchdays but expect crowds before and after games, so plan accordingly.

By Bus

Several bus routes serve the Old Trafford area.

  • From Manchester city centre, the 250 and 255 services (via Trafford Bar) are convenient choices.
  • Buses drop passengers a short walk from the ground on Chester Road.
  • After a match, be prepared for delays as traffic in the surrounding area can be heavy.

By Car

Driving can be convenient, but it requires good timing and patience.

  • The stadium’s postcode for sat nav users is M16 0RA.
  • The area has limited parking, and on matchdays many roads are subject to closures or resident-only restrictions.
  • Official parking at Old Trafford must be pre-booked through the club’s website.
  • Local businesses and schools often open their car parks on matchdays, though prices vary.

By Taxi or Rideshare

A taxi or rideshare from central Manchester typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

  • Drop-off points are usually on Chester Road or near Wharfside Way.
  • After matches, it’s best to walk a few blocks away from the main crowd before booking a pickup to avoid long waits.

On Foot or by Bike

For those staying nearby, walking or cycling can be the easiest option.

  • From Deansgate, the walk takes around 35 minutes along well-lit routes.
  • There are designated cycle stands near the stadium, but they fill quickly on matchdays, so arrive early.

Accessibility

Old Trafford is well equipped for visitors with disabilities.

  • Accessible parking spaces must be booked in advance.
  • The Metrolink network is wheelchair accessible at all stops near the stadium.
  • Stewards are available to assist with directions and access at entrances.

Tips for Matchday Travel

  • Arrive early: gates open around 90 minutes before kick-off.
  • Stay after the match: enjoy the atmosphere at the nearby bars or the club museum to avoid the transport rush.
  • Check schedules: train and tram timetables can vary during late kick-offs.
