What’s on the Roof? Exploring AT&T Stadium’s Retractable Design

AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, is more than just the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Since its opening in 2009, the building has stood as an engineering landmark. The most striking feature is its retractable roof, which gives the arena a unique flexibility compared to many other major sports venues.

A Roof Built on Scale and Strength

The roof of AT&T Stadium is one of the largest domed structures in the world. It spans 660,800 square feet, supported by two enormous steel arches that stretch across the length of the building. Each arch rises 292 feet above the playing field and measures 1,290 feet in length. This structural design eliminates the need for interior columns, leaving the field and stands completely unobstructed.

The roof is divided into two retractable panels, each weighing about 1.6 million pounds. These panels can be opened or closed in roughly 12 minutes, transforming the stadium from an open-air field into a fully covered dome.

How the Mechanism Works

The panels glide along tracks powered by 64 drive motors. Despite their enormous weight, the movement is precise and steady. The system was designed with efficiency and durability in mind, ensuring that the roof can operate safely in varying weather conditions. When opened, the panels create a 410-foot-wide opening, allowing natural light and air to flow directly onto the field.

Why the Retractable Roof Matters

The roof is more than a technological statement. It solves several practical issues. In the heat of a Texas summer, the stadium can be closed and cooled with air conditioning. On cooler autumn days, or for special events, the panels can be opened to create an outdoor feel. This flexibility has made AT&T Stadium a versatile venue, hosting NFL games, basketball tournaments, concerts, boxing, and even major soccer matches.

Architectural Symbolism

The sweeping roofline supported by the twin arches has become a defining feature of the stadium’s identity. From the outside, the shape resembles a giant spacecraft or modern coliseum. Inside, the clear span and retractable design ensure that the focus always remains on the field or stage below.

A Venue Built for the Future

AT&T Stadium’s roof was designed not just as a cover but as an adaptable feature that enhances the stadium’s role as a global sports and entertainment destination. Its combination of size, technology, and aesthetic impact ensures that it remains one of the most recognisable and functional stadium roofs in the world.
